I wonder what happened to the horse sculpture on the roof. I can't see it getting tossed, and I also have a vague feeling I've seen that horse on top of some other building in LA or the Valley. Maybe a bar or restaurant. Perhaps someone else has some idea.

.....but the Long Beach Freeway pretty much runs north and south, so I don't see how this view is looking west.

Here's a little bit of background on Ezequiel Moreno: He was a baker in his native Mexico. He was born in 1896 in Guadalupe, Zaca, Mexico. Mr. Moreno came to the US in 1917 and initially settled in Arizona where he was listed in his WWI draft registration as a miner. By 1919 he is in Los Angeles when his daughter was born. He is listed in the 1940 Census as the owner of a restaurant. Mr. Moreno became a naturalized US citizen in 1942. He died in South Pasadena in 1976.

What is that light-colored strip of land meandering down the mountainside? -is it an aqueduct cascade?

The picture would have been taken in Victory Park where they bring the floats after the parade for viewing. The light strip on the mountain is a fire break/fire road

The County Assessor has a secondary build date of 1945 but the original build date is not there. They are listed as commercial property by the assessor and offices by real estates sites

It is said that WJ Rooks was in Hollywood. 1906 Hollywood Directory lists him at Wilcox, south of Sunset blvd., "Home 261."

Source lists this image as an Orphanage/Asylum in Vista Del Mar, Palms area, 3200 Motor Ave, circa 1925. Vista Del Mar Family Services and Vista School are among the current occupants of the 3200 Motor Ave Address. Could there be a connection with a '27CD listing for 7619 Exposition Blvd., "Palms" ? Building permit for 7619 Exposition indicates '28 date.

Curious image purportedly from Alexandria Hotel featuring Fatty Arbuckle. Different sources peg this at 1913 and 1918. Seated to the right of FA is Adolph Zukor and Carl Laemmle. Other faces are familiar but their identities do not readily come to mind. (De Mille toward center of mirror?) Guessing Sam Behrendt is across the table sans headgear. Although this could be the Alexandria, the room does not have any of that Hotel's renowned opulence. The hats, aprons and lettering on mirror suggest this could have been a lodge meeting.

What is now known as Paramount Studios actually began in 1916 when Adolph Zukor merged his Famous Players Film Company with Lasky Films to form Famous Players-Lasky. A year later, Zukor took over Paramount Film Distribution and the new company was named Paramount Pictures.

Has anyone gotten a good look at the new bus terminal yet? Certainly there are some images online, as well as the VIP grand opening video on YouTube (in which the facility is pretty much empty). But I haven't seen anything yet that gives the feel of the place in typical conditions, or what the usual experience is of a passenger arriving or leaving at the station.

Although Metro says it's the largest bus-only facility west of Chicago, that hardly seems possible in the photos.

This is the Warner-Elektra-Atlantic (WEA) office building in Burbank. It's Julius Shulman's "Job 6109: Hugh Gibbs and Don Gibbs, Warner-Elektra-Atlantic Corporation (Los Angeles County, Calif.),1982".
NB. I've omitted some of the exterior photos and all of the black & white ones.







The sign at the reception desk names it as the Joel M Friedman Building (see below). I'm not sure who thought that white lettering on an off-white background was a good idea!

A week later, Oct 24 1981, Billboard published this article about Joel M Friedman, or "JMF" as he was obviously known. I tried adjusting the contrast on this one, but kept losing the lower-left corner.

Now a Warner Bros office building, it still stands at 111 N Hollywood Way. That's the corner of W Olive Avenue, opposite Warner Bros' Studios. From laconservancy.org:

"...the Gibbs & Gibbs-designed Warner Bros. office building on North Hollywood Way is a deconstructed residential building expanded into a commercial high-rise.

Completed in 1981, this office building has a wood post-and-beam structural system like the classic Mid-Century Modern homes built by USC School of Architecture-trained architects like Carl Maston, Raymond Kappe, Ladd & Kelsey, and Buff & Hensman. The wood structural members are exaggerated, extending far beyond the building's dark-tinted glass walls, and feature exposed hardware."

I can't help feeling that the current paint scheme and abundance of trees detract from the original design.

In El Monte, where it has replaced the old round one in the photo above. It does look rather interesting from the pictures I've seen, though those have mostly been limited to wide exteriors and bus bay close-ups. It's basically the eastern end of the Busway, though it also serves Greyhound and other carriers in addition to Metro.



(This is only a pre-construction rendering, but it's better than anything I can find of the finished structure, which is pretty close to it, anyway. And, not that I look at that tiny bus next to it, it's obviously bigger than I thought.
