Living in NYC: the very first month being a resident

So I just moved to the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights at the start of December, and uh... my only coherent thought at this point is I feel like 50% of my life now revolves around The Subway: riding it, looking at maps of it, thinking about what trains I need to take for the day, or even just wasting hours on nycsubway.org nerding out over the technical stuff.

And then there's the whole figuring out how to exist with other people in the subway cars... the politics of it are so simple yet so complicated. All I know is if I must be on the train at 2 AM there's no way in hell I'm doing it sober -- it's way more fun to be comfortably numb by then

Otherwise life isn't terribly different from the urban living I did in Boston for the last 10 years. Some things are more expensive (RENT), others are cheaper (takeout food, surprisingly), but for the most part life isn't all that different.

Anyway here's a mostly chronological stream of this first month, starting with my street, Fort Washington Ave in the 160s:

Some holiday lights in Harlem:

And off to Midtown:

The entire ceiling used to be that black:

Christmas at Grand Central:

Christmas at Penn Station:

You WILL love it, you WILL love it, you WILL love it

I know this is belated, but Happy Holidays everyone!

And I hope that EVERYTHING IS AWESOME in your new year!

Next month: KZ does Bruhhklyn

Some great Upper Manhattan perspectives. Love the views from the hilly streets.

Ha, well it's further up by 181st where they're trying to call it Hudson Heights, not so much down by me at 160th. But yeah, you won't catch me ever using realtorspeak... I know better than that

Love that you highlighted the ultramodern "new" New York, and also captured a bit of the increasingly scarce old-school ('70s-'80s) New York.

You will never get bored in that city. If you do, your not living life. Excellent set. Always something to see or do. The subway is always nice during the cold days. Nice and hot down there. The summer though is a different story. Enjoy!

Fantastic pics as always. Please come back to Boston and take pics whenever you can, ArchBoston isn't the same without your almost-daily updates and I now have more serious Boston Withdrawal than usual!!

By the way, what is that skinny supertall that you've captured in many of your photos? It really is huge...I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about that building before.

Really beautiful! Thanks for sharing all these pictures of NYC during Christmas and your experiences about your first month living at the Big Apple.

You´ve got an impressive urban scenary to enjoy a lot taking photos. We hope to see more very soon. I never get tired seeing NYC.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.
