New York City Megathread--a walk through some parks and squares in Manhattan

I took these photos while on a walk on Sunday, August 3, 2008. Hot day, but low humidity and pretty skies. Enjoy! I know it's kinda long, but I didn't want to split it up.

Beautiful Chelsea apartment house (W. 16th St. & 7th Ave.)

W. 16th St.

W. 16th St.

Some funk at W. 16th St. & 6th Ave.

Looking north on 6th Ave.

6th Ave.

6th Ave.

Looking east on W. 22nd St. That's the Flatiron Building peaking out center and One Madison Park looming above.

Loft buildings on W. 24th St.

A sweet little lady hopefully getting some respect and not knocked down (W. 24th St.)

Looking north on Broadway from W. 24th St.

Welcome to SQUARESVILLE!
Madison Square North

Madison Square with the old Metropolitan Life tower and the new One Madison Park condo rising

Madison Square East with (from left) the New York Life Building, the New York Merchandise Mart, Credit Suisse and the old Met Life clocktower which is being converted to some majorly swank condos

Madison Square

Madison Square with the Flatiron Building to the right

New York Life Building

Met Life Tower--I think it was the tallest building in the world for about 4 or 5 seconds

One Madison Park--tall and skinny and sold out

A couple of charming anachronisms on Park Ave. S.

Another shot of the clocktower from E. 23rd St. & Lexington Ave.

Looking north on Lexington from E. 23rd

Welcome to Gramercy Park!!

I love the way this building floats in the air

The venerable One Lexington Avenue, Gramercy Park

One Lexington Avenue--glorious

This house is probably intact due to the fact that this is now a historic district

Quiet residential area in the East Teens

E. 18th St. & 3rd Avenue

Exquisite East Teen townhouses

A 2d Ave. tenement building

E. 16th St. & 3d Ave.

Looking south on 3d Ave. with lower Manhattan skyscrapers in the distance

I think Washington Irving lived in that corner house, hence the name of the street.

One more shot of Irving Pl.

E. 17th St. near Union Sq.

One of my favorite NYC buildings--it used to be the Guardian Life Insurance Building, northeast corner of Union Square

Union Square North

Union Square loungers

Another view of organic Union Square

Union Square West

I think this coffee shop place was featured in Sex in the City--it's always packed

Apartment tower on Union Square South

Quite a few talented artists sell their wares here. There's also an enormous Green Market here on weekends.

Union Square Southwest--that's Con Ed's headquarters building (with the clock)

Union Square is an incredibly dynamic place

I love this apartment building--University Pl. btw E. 9th and E. 10th Sts.

Wonderful shots. The real beauty of New York's skyline lies in its almost endless supply of charming, historic mid-rise buildings.

So much to like there....

where does one start...?

Would it be possible to break this down into part one and part two in the future.....it froze my computer and I had to re-boot?

That's quite a walk you took. Great tour. I know a girl who lives in One Fifth. Here father is Tony-winning actor Dick Latessa.

Great pics...I know almost every block in these pics...btw- Casa Mono at the corner of Irving Place (in one of your pics) has some of the best Tappas! The wine, cheese, and jamon serano bar next door is excellent too!!

incredible photo thread... one of the most interesting Manhattan threads I've ever seen... you really have a great eye for the charming human-scale streetscapes that are so often overshadowed by the forest of dorky condo towers and bland corporate might

this thread displays exactly what appeals to me

I loved every picture. I'll be back in NY later this month and you just reignited my hard-on for the town.

Like NYC itself, this megathread is overwhelming (in a good way). Your pictures are outstanding. I'll just have to check it out multiple times to get through it all.

I love the streetscenes and the architectural details. Awesome City!

Don't worry about it being long. If all photo tours were this long, I'd be in heaven.

You have talent. Love that distant skyscrapers shot. I want to see Harlem.

Oh god, I love your tour.

What I found most interesting is you and I (at least in this set) have the same eye in what you captured in your photos. I was last in NYC almost two years ago, and seeing these makes me visit again soon. Why can't I have some close family in this great city. They would get tired of seeing me, because every chance I get I would be there. Its a little bit harder when you have to pay both airline fare, and hotel fees, especially when I visit since I like to spend no less than a week.

Oh well, maybe one day, I'll get an opportunity for a dream job (lol) and move there.

Thanks!!

One madison park is astounding. I hope to see a whole generation of sliver towers now that prices in manhattan keep rising.

NYC needs more Hong Kong style sliver towers!
