the closest things I can think of are, for example, the redo of Hunter's Point and Candlestick, or India Basin, or the combined Pier70/PowerPlant sites.
but none of these are existing 'neighborhoods' where you have large-scale displacement as described in Pedestrian's post. they are more similar to the Mission Bay scenario.
the other closest approximant might be Dogpatch right now, where the neighborhood is transforming quickly, but more organically, piece by piece.
the current version of re-imagining SOMA, the Central SOMA plan, envisions evolution rather than virtual extinction and re-creation as well.
agree with Pedestrian that, in the next 40 years, the pendulum is not likely to swing that far back to a mind-set where 60s-style urban renewal is considered acceptable - and hopefully never.
