National Day fireworks to take place in Taiwan’s Kaohsiung

Southern port city to host National Day fireworks for first time in 20 years

(Taiwan News) — The National Day fireworks will take place at Kaohsiung's Pier-2 Art Center this year, as the city has been given the opportunity to host the event again after two decades.

In a Facebook post on Monday (March 29), Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) announced the exciting news that the National Day Preparatory Committee has agreed to arrange the 2021 National Day fireworks in the city. He said this will be the first time in 20 years and the second time in history that Kaohsiung will replace Taipei for the fireworks.

Chen pointed out the city has witnessed the gradual transformation of its Asia New Bay Area — where the Kaohsiung Music Center, the Pier-2 Art Center, the Great Harbor Bridge, and the Kaohsiung Port Warehouse No.2 (KW2) are all located — during the last decades. He said the waterfront area has become one of the most important and vibrant hubs for local cultural and art events.

Through the launch of the National Day fireworks, Kaohsiung will touch the hearts of its residents and people across Taiwan, Chen said. He added that the combination of the fireworks and the Kaohsiung Port will create a breathtaking scene that will make every Taiwanese proud.

Meanwhile, Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Shih Che (史哲) said the city government is aiming to throw a larger firework display than the one in Sydney, Australia on New Year's Eve. He also mentioned that both the Taiwan Lantern Festival and the Taiwan Design Expo in 2022 will be held in Kaohsiung as well.

(CNA) The National Day fireworks show, which will be held in Kaohsiung for the first time in 20 years, will be limited to only 20,000 on-site spectators, according to the event's preparatory committee on Thursday.

The celebrations, to be held Oct. 10, take into consideration the government's COVID-19 regulations and will be adjusted in line with any new protocols issued by the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) said at a press briefing.

The number of spectators has been downgraded from the original plan, which anticipated 690,000 people, Chen said, indicating that members of the public wishing to attend the show have to sign up online to enter a draw.

However, if there is a sudden spike in community transmissions of unknown origin ahead of the event, the show could still be canceled, Chen added.

The celebrations will be held on a 35-hectare plot of land at the edge of Kaohsiung Port, according to the committee responsible for planning and organizing the 2021 National Day fireworks show in the southern Taiwanese city.

Different viewing stages will be set up at the site for spectators to watch the fireworks display, including at Pier-2 Art Center and the Kaohsiung Music Center, the committee said.

Attendees will, however, be required to wear face masks at all times, and eating will not be allowed, it added.

The last time the event was held in Kaohsiung was in 2000, the first time the fireworks display was ever held outside Taipei, Chen wrote on his Facebook page in March.

The Double Ten National Day fireworks show, which is to be held in Kaohsiung for the first time in 20 years, is to be limited to only 20,000 onsite spectators, the event’s preparatory committee said yesterday.

Main National Day events scaled down

By Lin Chia-nan / Staff reporter

Major celebrations for Double Ten National Day in Taipei, Hsinchu and Kaohsiung will be scaled down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Deputy Minister of the Interior Chen Tsung-yen (陳宗彥) said yesterday.

Chen, who is deputy head of the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), is also secretary-general of the government’s organization committee for National Day events.

This year’s activities would be scaled down significantly compared with previous years, Chen told the CECC’s daily news briefing in Taipei when asked about disease prevention plans.

There are three major activities planned — an evening gala on Oct. 9 in Hsinchu City, and on Oct. 10 a ceremony near the Presidential Office in Taipei and a fireworks show at the Port of Kaohsiung, he said.

It is the first time the Hsinchu City Government has been appointed to host a national day celebration, with the gala to be at Hsinchu Air Force Base.

President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), other government officials and overseas compatriots are to attend the Hsinchu event, Chinese-language media have reported.

While the base can accommodate 10,000 to 20,000 people, attendance would be capped at 2,500, Chen said.

At the Taipei event on Ketagalan Boulevard, participants will be limited to 6,000, he said.

The fireworks show at the port, which can accommodate more than 600,000 people, would be limited to about 20,000, he said.

Everyone at the fireworks show would have a seat and there would be at least 1m between each seat, Chen said.

The plans are subject to change if the pandemic situation worsens, he said.

The organizers of the three events are to prepare disease prevention plans, which would be subject to approval by the CECC, he said.

Military personnel who are to take part in Double Ten National Day events started rehearsals in front of the Presidential Office yesterday, the Military News Agency reported.
