Back in the days I lived there, Sherbrooke used to get one murder every 2-3 years or so. I am not sure if that rate eventually increased, but I think it is safe to say violent crimes remain a rare occurrence there.

^^^

The murder rate and violent crime rate are two different things. For example while Victoria's murder rate is half the national average in 2019 it had the 3rd highest Crime Severity Index in the country.

Wherever you live in Canada, if you stay away from the drug scene and the scenes directly related to it, you have an exceedingly low chance of being a victim of violent crime and essentially a statistically nil chance of being murdered.

BTW, the 4 in Sarnia {which is freakishly high} is being looked into now as being potentially related.

I looked it up on StatsCan - 1, 2, 1, 4, 1 - 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019

Québec City is 2, 1, 10, 3, 5 for the same period and is a much bigger city. 7 in 2020, though. Also, Lévis technically has not had a murder in about a decade. And Lévis has only 25,000 fewer people.

I think Sherbrooke had 1 murder in 2020 - Joël Mailhot

Thanks for the info. I was referring to 2000-2007, and it looks like the city went murder-free 3 years in a row during that period, which is probably what I had in mind. You are right that the rate is lower in Quebec City.

Actually, I just remembered that Lévis did have a murder in 2017 (not a good year for Qébec City but then neither was 2020).

https://ici.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle...re-femme-levis
He got 12 years after the trial in Feb. 2020.

Of course, this is assuming we ignore the double homicide in St. Apollinaire last year and the quadruple homicide in 2014 (in St. Isodore and St. Croix) and the murder in Saint-Lambert de Lauzon, also in 2017.

Still, Lévis is incredibly safe given its population.

Charges are yet to be proven in court. These are rather odd cases, nevertheless.

One person has died as the result of what appears to be a random multiple stabbing incident in North Vancouver.

One person is dead and multiple people were taken to hospital as police responded to a mass stabbing in North Vancouver on Saturday.

North Vancouver RCMP said that “multiple victims” were stabbed within and outside the Lynn Valley Library. One suspect was in custody, and police said the attacker appeared to be acting alone.

I just watched the video by News1130.
(1) It’s super sad.
(2) Sergeant Frank Jang sure has a few high-profile cases on his plates now (3?).

There was murder not far from where I live yesterday.

Two men from Windsor shot a man in Blenheim and were apprehended soon after.

As gang warfare seems to on the rise again, this channel popped up in my recommendations on Youtube. The videos focus on various Canadian gangs throughout history. It's well put together and documented.

This one about the Bacon Brothers was pretty interesting.

There’s been a spate of pretty brazen murders in Vancouver recently in very public places. Maybe it’s because of the pandemic but it doesn’t seem like people are talking about it as much as they normally do.

Hard to forgo the glamour of the drug gangbanger lifestyle.

....During a search of the suspects, police said they saw a “large dialer bag full of suspected crack cocaine and powder cocaine was located protruding from the rectum of the vehicle’s passenger.”

The bag contained 18 rocks of suspected crack cocaine with a total weight of 9.05 grams and 26 spitballs of suspected powder cocaine with a total weight of 14.05 grams.

“There are gang members on social media trying to sell the idea that gang life is a life of wealth, luxury and prestige,” Const. Sarbjit Sangha, Surrey RCMP media relations officer, said in a release. “The reality is that gang members live in constant fear of getting robbed or murdered by other gang members or getting arrested by police. This is the reason why they risk their lives by sticking bags of deadly drugs into their rectums.”...(bold mine)

Thunder Bay has made it 139 days into the year with only a single homicide, which happened a few weeks ago. It hit very close to home, the victim was the 18-year-old brother of my neice's friend and neighbour. Apparently he was drinking with two friends and they got into an argument that resulted in a knife fight.

https://www.tbnewswatch.com/local-ne...f-2021-3744585

Thunder Bay went from August 30, 2020 to April 30, 2021 (8 months) without a homicide, I haven't checked but that's likely one of the longest stretches without a murder in the past decade, and likely a result of the high level of attention that social services was paying to the local vulnerable population during the pandemic. Now that all of that apparatus is winding down, crime and drug issues are winding back up. People are out on the street most of the time again, income support has wound down and "the economy" is coming back to life.
