it will survive. if you look closely in the pics, most of the renovation will be a new annex in the parking lot just west of ceba. as an LSU engineering alumnus, i can tell you the entire existing building could use a gut job on the inside. terribly laid out, terribly maintained. the engineering school produces some of the most financially-able graduates, but does a poor job of reaching out to them. you can only hit up chevron and BP so many times for renovation donations...hell my high school hits me up more than LSU does.

I'm a graduate of Architecture at LSU back in the early 90's and can still remember the frustration my friends in engineering had finding their way around CEBA.....a lot of funny "bad Architect" jokes came out of that building!!! haha!

This is an impressive presentation by the DDD of Baton Rouge on what's recently built and what is to be build or developed in the very near future, great site!

The Onyx Residences: CBD

Located at the former City Year/ Zales corner @ North Third and Convention Streets:

Commercial Properties will spend $6 million to redevelop the property, which has been renamed The Onyx Residences. Plans are to have 28 one- and two-bedroom apartments built above 5,600 square feet of commercial space. The building is expected to open in fall 2014.

The Standard / North Gate

A new five-story, 247-unit apartment complex that will cater to LSU students could open on West Chimes Street as early as August.

The city-parish Planning Commission gave unanimous final approval to plans for The Standard at Baton Rouge luxury housing development after a brief public hearing Monday night.

Landmark Companies, the Athens, Ga., firm behind The Standard, expects construction to begin in the spring.

At times it seems there is more new construction in Baton Rouge than New Orleans....I hear Lafayette is booming also. Maybe someone should start a thread for that area of the state.

Keep your friggin pollution pumping poisoning water and air plants in Texas....but yes! Move your headquarters here. We do not need anymore petro-pollutants flowing downriver to NOLA and poisoning the Gulf creating an even larger dead zone.

CBD / Holiday Inn Express



The historic Baton Rouge Savings & Loan building at 400 North Blvd. will be renovated into an 89-room Holiday Inn Express by the end of 2014. Plans for the hotel were announced at this morning morning’s DDD meeting by architect Francisco Alecha, who says construction will begin in January. Renovations will entail a restoration of the exterior and interior of the building to National Park Service standards. Renderings of the renovated building display a royal blue color on the exterior of the first floor and the original clock on the exterior wall facing west restored back to operation.



The 1950's ERA structure, built in the International Style, is one of the few representative examples of low-rise International Style buildings in Louisiana," notes New Orleans architect Francisco Alecha, noting the three-story, stand-alone building is constructed of cast-in-place, reinforced concrete columns, beams and joists and was designed by the noted local architects Bodman & Murrell & Smith.

a few thoughts:

glad to see downtown BR on the upward slope. lots to overcome though:
-tons of surface lots
-very few after hours attractions besides 3rd street bars and casino
-downtown feels very "cut off" by interstate on 2 sides, state capital grounds on 3rd, and obviously river on 4th.

for as good as downtown has been doing, development on Burbank has been deplorable:
-tons of college apartments and tiny cookie cutter homes going up, all with single outlets onto Burbank and no development of a street grid. All this will deteriorate to the levels of the stuff on Jennifer Jean, Tigerland, Alvin Dark, etc. Look @ Lake Beau Pre...same concept and the place is a shithole now. How much off-campus student housing is really necessary? Seems pretty saturated at the moment.


By the way...how have we not discussed the whole St George issue?

It should. The DDD is planning to begin these projects as others are wrapping up. Also the bike path and linear park beneath I-110 should begin.

I wish! New Orleans has much more going on but Baton Rouge isn't slacking.

Surface lots aren't much of a problem, IMO. There are other cities with twice as many in their downtowns. Most of the developed areas like 3rd, Convention, and Lafayette don't have many surface lots although I'd like to see them filled.

For the size and history of Baton Rouge, downtown has come a LONG way. Just 10 years ago there were no hotels and not a lick of nightlife or residential to speak of. It was a joke. There's Tsunami (Lafayette St rooftop bar/restaurant), the Blues Room on Lafayette, Hotel Indigo bar, and Red Star (looks like some Russian cabaret club). There are about 15 bars/lounges downtown and more and more keep opening. Not shabby considering that 3rd St was dead just a mere few years ago.

I don't think the interstates or Capitol Grounds hinder that much of anything. That part of Mid-City as well as downtown bordering the interstate isn't lively or attracting business like other parts of the city. The Capitol doesn't block any kind of desirable neighborhood. All there is above it are plants. The river is an attraction in itself.

What do you expect on Burbank? The rich people's homes with land backing Burbank don't want that kind of development and Baton Rouge isn't the leader in urban projects. If you want to see urban student living then keep an eye out for Old South Baton Rouge, especially if the Water Campus breaks ground.

Master Site Plan

Plans for the River District, a mixed-use project of residential units, office buildings and retail space that will be developed along Nicholson Drive between LSU and downtown were presented yesterday.

The project, as proposed, will be developed on 34.8 acres on both sides of Nicholson. Plans have been in the works for six years but were stalled by the national recession. Plans for the development include: 1,800 residential units—both condos and apartments—a 220-room hotel, 100,000 square feet of office space and 100,000 square feet of commercial space, including a 40,000-square-foot neighborhood grocery store or drugstore.

note* the development is adjacent to and immediately south of the recently announced Water Institute of the Gulf (Water Campus)
