Winnipeg Activism (urbanism, and more)
Winnipeg Activism (urbanism, and more)
This is a thread where we can post about local organizations that are trying to make Winnipeg a better city. Folks on this forum have a lot of great ideas about how Winnipeg can be improved, and we all care enough about it to trawl this forum, so I'd like to encourage people here to channel some of that energy in ways that might plausibly result in positive change. Especially the following are on topic and welcome:
* notices of upcoming events (meetings, talks, strikes, information sessions, fundraisers, ...)
* summaries of events after the fact
* news relating to existing organizations, or of new ones trying to get off the ground
* discussion of what kinds of activism we would like to see in Winnipeg, what might work/won't work
List of organizations (work in progress, will be continuously updated):

In short, YIMBY stands for “Yes In My Backyard” – the opposite of “Not In My Backyard”. To learn more about YIMBY Winnipeg’s mandate, see here. Here’s a primer on what saying “Yes” means for Winnipeg.
Saying YES to compact, productive, mixed-use development means MORE!
* More walkable neighbourhoods where people can easily access a lot of their daily needs within walking distance: think shopping & services, recreation, schools and jobs
* More housing for people at every age and stage of life
* More freedom to choose active and shared modes of transportation
* More property tax revenue to keep our city solvent and taking care of its citizens
* More access/mobility for youth, seniors, and people without a drivers’ license or a vehicle
Saying YES also means LESS of the things we don’t want:
* Less traffic, congestion and speeding
* Less carbon and pollution to wreak havoc on our climate and lungs
* Less disease and injury, resulting in lower health care costs

Overview
Founded in 2003 and incorporated as a non-profit in 2017, Winnipeg Trails is a dynamic organization that plays a critical and comprehensive role in the development of a modern, sustainable city through the primary lens of active transportation.
Vision
We envision a place where the natural world and human dignity are so important to us that we design our transportation systems to eliminate every possible barrier – a place where we can always hear the sound of conversation, go safely to work or see a loved one, where birds and animals of every kind abound, where night skies and clean water are protected, and where simple pleasures – like smelling fresh air or swimming in our rivers – are once again the norm.
Mission
Winnipeg Trails implements practical, opportune and innovative ideas with an emphasis on creative problem solving, inter-sectoral partnerships, capacity-building, citizen involvement and evidence-based decision making.
