Hockey penalties are by their nature borderline calls a lot of the time, so beyond the most egregious examples, judgment calls have to be made. Unless one team is blatantly fouling more than the other, it makes sense that there should be some purposeful even-ness in the number of penalties called. I'm sure that the refs are also quite conscious that there will be complaints if they call many more penalties against one team vs. the other. I don't think this was a very good decision by the NHL.

Bottom line, he screwed up and got caught. The NHL made the right call.

You have not watched to much NHL in the last 30 years i suspect.

The bias i see from Refs in general is staggeringly apparent. Worst now imo.

Well my team is no better this year although I want to keep our young core. We are sellers now I think.

I have. And like you said, it's your opinion. One I do not share. Most refs are fair, or at least try to be. These refs need to make quick calls on the fly, sometimes for events that happen at high speed. Most of the time, they get it right. Sometimes they get it wrong. It's not a bias every time they get it wrong, or that they try to be fair and equalize the calls on each side.

Considering these guys can make close to $400,000 a year, getting caught saying "i wanted to give Nashville a penalty" is stupid and definately punishable, especially early on in the game. What was he trying to equalize exactly? The NHL made the right call, and let this be a lesson to other referees who you think are bias. Either straighten up, or don't get caught saying stupid shit on the mic. Ideally, do both.

I'm glad referees are mic'd up. Or else this would never have been caught. This is also why all cops in every city need to have body cameras.

As an Oilers fan, who detests both the Flames and Canucks, the Canucks have a core of generally likeable, skilled young players. I don’t see any Matt Cookes or Alex Burrows on the current roster (Roussel maybe). Demko looks to be the real deal, but there will be some tough times. My friend’s son played with him in Utica and he’s a level headed kid.

I can’t say the same about the Flames. No identity whatsoever. Not particularly skilled, nor particularly gritty, and no cohesion. Treliving’s days must be numbered.

Canadiens land C Eric Staal for a 3rd and a 5th. Buffalo retains 50% of Staal's salary. Habs are pick rich, so a very low-risk move. The exodus from Buffalo has begun.

Related to that, and not sure if it was mentioned in another thread, but the Canadian government has relaxed the 14 day quarantine for NHL players coming to Canada, to 7 days now. That might spark a bit more cross border action like this deal as the trade deadline approaches.

Not to mention the possible signing and call up of Cole Caufield, now that his team is out of the NCAA playoffs.

I get what you are saying....but being mic'd up only catches a fraction of what their intent is or isn't.. Anyway I digress.

Interesting take I just heard on a podcast was that the firing of Tim Peel was itself a make-up call by the NHL for all the times make-up calls have happened and nothing was done about it.

Two garbage goals for the Leafs and a bit of a misstep by the Oilers by not keeping on them.
