Kaohsiung, Sept. 1 (CNA) Acclaimed Taiwanese filmmaker Wei Te-sheng (魏德聖) appeared excited on Tuesday as he announced the beginning of work to build the set of his newest film project, a three-episode film series telling the early history of Taiwan starting 400 years ago.

"I am happy and nervous at the same time," Wei said during a ceremony marking the start of the construction in the southern port city of Kaohsiung.

The construction on two hectares of reclaimed land from the sea will allow the filming of "Taiwan Trilogy" to start smoothly in August next year as scheduled, Wei said, with the goal of recreating a tribe of the indigenous Siraya people that lived in Taiwan 400 years ago.

Estimating that the set will cost NT$30 million (US$1 million) to build, more than 30 Sirayan houses will be constructed from bamboo, wood and straw, and will include a church, warehouses and gathering halls, according to Wei.

In addition, many plants that were common on the Jianan Plain in southwestern Taiwan some 400 years ago will be planted to recreate the actual living environment of the Siraya people as closely as they can, Wei said.

Because trees need time to grow, the set building has had to start one year before shooting begins, he said, so that the film can be as close to reality as possible.

The epic movie series "Taiwan Trilogy: Siraya," "Taiwan Trilogy: Teyouan" and "Taiwan Trilogy: Formosa" are part of Wei's ambitious "The Taiwan 400 Years Film Series" project, following his two-part historical drama film "Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale" in 2011.

The film series introduces Taiwan's early history, featuring indigenous Siraya hunters and gatherers, ethnic Chinese pirates and Dutch missionaries as the protagonists, and tells the stories of the different ethnic groups that lived in Taiwan at various times.

It will also include a separate documentary "Finding Formosa (working title)" and animation "Darami -- A Formosan Fantasy (working title)," which are expected to be released in 2024.

"We need to understand our past before we can create our future," Wei said on the website his team created to raise funds for the big project.

He noted that he finished the script for "Taiwan Trilogy" in 2001. "As a story about all Taiwanese people, it begins with Taiwan's entry onto the world stage and the world first setting foot on Taiwanese soil, and depicts Taiwan's cultural pluralism.

"In the Age of Discovery, this little island played an important role and contains many wonderful stories," he said.

On Tuesday, Wei revealed that he has invited Japanese actor Masatoshi Nagase to play a role in the first episode of "Taiwan Trilogy," which is expected to be released in 2024.

The 54-year-old Nagase is known in Taiwan for his starring role in the 2014 Taiwanese baseball film "Kano," directed by Umin Boya and produced by Jimmy Huang and Wei.

The film depicts how the multiracial Kano baseball team from Japanese colonial-era Taiwan overcame extreme odds to represent the island in the 1931 Japanese High School Baseball Championship.

導演魏德聖籌備20年的《臺灣三部曲》自8月初上線募資，上月底完成第一階段3000萬元目標，今正式在高雄南星計畫區搭景，還原400年前西拉雅部落「麻豆社」原樣。魏德聖在記者會上鬆口氣，表示心情很興奮，也強調：「不能回頭了，但我們從來沒有玩假的，一直都是玩真的！」

魏導以「台灣人送給台灣400年的禮物」為號召，希望打造耗資90億元的「豐盛之城」樂園以及《臺灣三部曲》電影。去年11月魏德聖和台南市政府已簽下118公頃土地BOT合約案，正逐步在台南後壁搭建園區。資金部分以企業募資為主，目前募得約2億多元。

電影部分則以《臺灣三部曲》作為總稱，囊括3部電影、1部紀錄片、1部動畫片，八成場將在台灣拍攝，另外會到沖繩、荷蘭拍攝，預計每部電影成本約12億，總預算達45億元。自8月5日起向全民募資，希望可以籌到1億元資金，目前已有3000多萬資金到位。不少演藝圈朋友低調捐款，就連前奧運選手「飛躍羚羊」紀政也捐出50萬元，讓魏德聖非常感動。


魏德聖透露，樂園部分目前因為地下水位變化問題，還要在做土質改善等措施，建造計畫的確有調整。目前計畫在2024年12月31日上映第一部電影《火焚之軀》，地點希望選在「豐盛之城」舉辦首映會，樂園也會於當天同步試營運，隔年再上映《鯨骨之海》、2026年則是《應許之地》。

今魏德聖率領團隊在高雄首度搭景「麻豆社」場景，為了最自然且真實的還原，麻豆社場景的植被、林木都將以自然方式生長，搭景時間預計需要1年。電影預計明年8月開拍，3部電影都將用到該場景，拍攝期將長達1年8個月。魏德聖也賣關子表示，會將荷蘭人與日本人、原住民的衝突「濱田彌兵衛事件」納入故事之中，也已經邀請了日本影帝永瀨正敏加入，對方客氣表示「沒問題沒問題」。其他演員也差不多都確定了，接下來將開始訓練，多以素人演員為主。


今天《臺灣三部曲》電影場景搭建動工儀式，高雄市長陳其邁率副市長史哲、文化局局長王文翠、海洋局代理局長黃登福等市府相關官員到場表示支持。此外，還有玉山金控總經理陳美滿、高雄市議員林智鴻、陳致中也一起出席參加。

對於將耗資臺灣影史最高拍攝成本，預計每部12億，總共36億預算打造的史詩作品《臺灣三部曲》首個場景的動工就落腳在高雄，高雄市長陳其邁表示：「魏德聖導演醞釀20年，這麼龐大的《臺灣三部曲》電影計畫，除了要一次拍攝三部電影，更要把400年前，臺灣躍上世界舞台，這樣有意義的時刻拍出來，讓臺灣人都更知道這段故事和歷史，高雄市政府當然是全力支持配合。」高雄市政府也提供免地租優惠，希望鼓勵文創、支持魏德聖的計畫。玉山金控也以3年3000萬贊助支持。

魏德聖為了募資幾乎用盡所有宣傳管道，昨晚還上「反正我很閒」YouTube頻道，以「大業配時代」搞笑宣傳，當他嚴肅但無奈說出「第一次登錄就送S級火槍兵」，「喝鹿茸酒晚上讓你兵乓久」，成為反差笑點，網友也熱烈埋單，影片上線17小時，已有47萬點擊率。

魏導也笑說，1天之內就募到了100萬元，算是還滿成功的行銷，但距離全部需要的資金還有很大努力空間，希望更多人可以支持。第一階段的電影集資將開放到10月10日，明年推出第二階段的集資計畫。（楊絲貽／高雄報導）

Wei Te-Sheng’s ‘Taiwan Trilogy’ Sets Funding Record on Way to $155 Million Mega-Production

Nearly 20,000 people have contributed over $3.4 million (NT$100 million) to a crowdfunding campaign to back award-winning filmmaker Wei Te-sheng’s (“Cape No. 7,” “Seedig Bale”) ambitious “Taiwan Trilogy” that retells the history of Taiwan from 400 years ago. The amount publicly raised is a record for a film project on the self-ruled island.

“Taiwan Trilogy,” which is expected to cost $157 million (NT$4.5 billion) to produce, is also the biggest and most expensive film project originated from Taiwan. To raise funds for the project, the production team led by Wei approached not only corporations for sponsorships but also launched the first phase of the crowdfunding campaign on August 5.

As of mid-day Thursday, some 19,004 people had promised NT$103 million, reaching the fundraising goal of NT$100 million two days before the first phase campaign was scheduled to be completed, according to the campaign’s website. Those who contributed this round of fundraising will be given a set of limited edition memorabilia from the first part of the trilogy.

Styled as “a gift to Taiwan,” Wei plans to recreate a world from a distant past and to tell the history of Taiwan from three different perspectives; in part one, “Siraya” the indigenous people; the Han pirates in “Teyouan”; and Dutch missionaries in “Formosa.”

In addition to the trilogy, this mega project collectively known as Taiwan 400 Years Film Series will also include an animated feature and a documentary, on how history and the fate of different peoples converged on the island during the Age of Discovery.

Wei completed the script of the trilogy back in 2000. But early pre-production did not begin until three years ago. Construction of the sets alone for “Siraya,” are estimated as costing $1 million (NT$30 million). Building begun last month on two hectares of reclaimed land in the southern port city of Kaohsiung.

The restored Madou Village will comprise more than 30 Sirayan houses made of wood, bamboo and straw, as well as a church, warehouses and gathering halls. Wei also told the media in Taiwan that plants that were commonly found on the Jianan Plain in southwestern Taiwan four centuries ago will be re-planted to recreate the habitat of Siraya people.

Shooting is expected to commence in August 2021, and the first part of the trilogy is aimed for a 2024 release, to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Taiwan. Japan’s Taneda Yohei and Hanatani Hidefumi, the duo who worked on “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” have joined as supervising production designer and production designer respectively. Chin Ting-Chang (“Cape No. 7,” “Prince of Tears”) is on board as director of photography. Christian Rajaud (“Wolf Totem”) serves as visual effects director.
