Why did North Americans figure out that the ground floor should be above grade? Is that solely due to putting in basements that the UK doesn't have?

416, the colour of the cab, and not that there aren't Jerk places in the ROC but Toronto has a large Caribbean (Jamaican) community.

Actually, that's true, come to think of it. Still, though, those ethnic strip malls are very distinctively Toronto (I expect now someone will link to Street View images from Queens NY to prove me wrong).

Normally I would have said with the EXIF data, but I don’t see any for this one picture. I’ve been to Vaduz but still could not figure where this was taken somehow. The buildings are simply too generic. But it does have a Austria/Liechtenstein feel.

I thought it said NBUB Bank on the buildings, but switching the B to E gets you NEUE Bank which quickly leads to Liechtenstein.

The atmosphere of the square and the bank building are very interesting, almost Eastern European. My first thought was somewhere in Georgia.

Yes, the "genericness" of the buildings was what led me to take the pic. I thought some might be fooled into thinking it was in BC. Lichtenstein has a very weird vibe for Western Europe. I find Austrian architecture to be much more attractive.

Yes, very few UK homes have basements. Although in London there are now lots of iceburg homes. I lived in 3 different homes in the UK (2 built in the 30's and one in the 60's) and none had a basement. I recall one relative with a basement but it was very damp and actually quite slipperty on the floor...just a place to put stuff that didn't matter.

I was in FL (Liechenstein) for a couple of hours. Strange place with lots of company HQ but no company. The mountains nearby have meadows going up to quite a height and it is a very calm bucolic place.
