Mostly it's that Portland has a decades old policy that connections between buildings should happen at the ground level. (As an example of why, here's a quick blog post about Minneapolis' skyway system.) Exceptions are allowed where there is a demonstrated public benefit, as is the case for OHSU's recently approved skywalk connecting CHH North and South.

I know about the policy and certainly, in general, think it is a good one. In this case there is clearly a private benefit -- but also a public benefit I would think, in terms of people being able to easily access the base of the tower/top of the podium, including green space IIRC, from the street. Wouldn't it be best to mitigate the feeling that this rather imposing tower is an island separated from the city life below? Of course, hopefully I am mistaken in anticipating that as a problem in the first place.

But it's also extremely difficult to get a new skybridge built in Portland. Despite the headaches they're causing some developers in regard to heights, the Historic Landmarks Commission seems to me like it would be an easier road to go down than trying to get a skybridge built. I don't see a skybridge being approved for this site. Also, there's plenty of historic precedence for buildings opening onto the bridge. The hotel that used to stand where the Yard is also opened onto the bridge until it was demolished in the 80's. The decision to separate these buildings from the bridge still seems odd to me.

Unhappy East Burnside or East Berlin

I hope this building looks better when complete.

Currently it looks very dark and drab. Most days in Portland are rainy and dark. The renderings were so much better.

Did anyone ever see the model?

I personally like it! And can't wait to see it with the landscaped roofs etc.

I am liking it more as it gets taller and more of the facade goes up.

Is it dark and ominous on a cloudy day? Yeah. Is it still a decent building? Yes. I did however think that there would be more windows by this point.

When you look at the renderings, this floor should have 75-80% windows, when it looks more like 60% at most...

It reminds me of a fatter and shorter version of Seattle's tallest building

What? This looks nothing like the Columbia Center.

But I agree, where the heck are the windows?

Yea? You don't think it has that all black stealth look like the Columbia center?

Well...it's brown. So, no. This thing would look amazing if it was stealthy and black, and actually had windows.

I think why it looks so ugly and out of place is because it's the tallest tower in that area and pretty much an eye sore

This project is curious - on the one hand most people held it up as a great project and looked forward to it....and on the other hand many (maybe most) people find the actual building dark, brooding, and less lovable.

The original renderings were seductive ...and probably inaccurate.

I love it. I spend enough time in this area to see it changing.

The juxtaposition of old and new in the area is pretty neat right now.

Is it topped out? If not, how many floors are left for them to make the matte black to glass transition look anything remotely close to the rendering?
