Federal Zoning Regulations wouldn't prohibit tall buildings in front of an ATB (Air Terminal Building). So provided it wasn't in a designated flight path and outside of the most sensative Noise Exposure Contours (NEF) for Jet noise (which this is) then a hotel would be aloud. Obviously, the higher the NEF - a hotel wouldn't be allowed.

In this case, it's still in the 30 NEF and so would have to sound proof but could still go ahead.

Ahh, but it is.
Late last winter i watched a whole squadron of CF18's (likely coming back from overseas) take off and several flew basically over the site of the hotel.

Granted these were fighter jockeys who enjoy putting on a show, but the fact remains that any area that close to a terminal could be overflown.

/ Those CF-18's are LOUD and damn fast. Especially at full afterburner during takeoff. It was a hell of a sight!

I think the plan is to build another pedestrian bridge from the hotel to the terminal, probably in the same timeline that the south end of the terminal is refurbished to look more like the refurbed north end.

8:34pm - the crane is still up.

The rendering here shows the hotel joining the existing pedway....

Right from the Marco project page

"The hotel will be connected directly to the airport terminal via a pedway, thereby allowing guests to transition from their room to their flight with maximum comfort."

Craneception: A crane to assemble a crane to disassemble another crane. WE NEED TO GO DEEPER.

I also love how it seems in most of the shots- be it taken with a camera, or webcam grabs of this area, the 320 is usually at it's stop.

I don't think it showed up in any of my images but you can clearly see where the pedestrian link will extend over to the bridge from the second level.

This can be seen from Highway 102 near EXIT 9 about 20 km away from the airport.

I really like the look of this hotel, it's simple yet has that elegant touch. I think it'll do very well at the airport.

I'm curious as to when they're planning on linking it up with the pedway to the terminal..

Same here. Are they planning to link it to the second floor? If so it looks like it doesn't align and it would have to ramp up/Down a little bit.

Should be completed with the Hotel, I would think. Doesn't look like a long distance.

They may be waiting until the rest of the hotel is closer to completion.

It just seems amazing that they didn't build the second level to be at the same height as the walkway. I think the ALT design is a standard setup for their hotels but surely a design change could've been made at least in this case. There will have to be a ramp and stairs/escalator to get up to the level of the walkway.

Many airport hotels which are connected to an airport employ a similar approach. It's to provide opportunities for quick drop in and fly out meeting spaces without people having to venture into the lobby or the rest of the hotel. I suspect the space near the connection will be meeting rooms of various shapes an sizes, so that last minute meetings etc. can happen very quickly and then people to drive back to the City or check in and fly out. While the design and look may be different, the Fairmont at YVR has a very similar concept, although the meeting rooms are off of the main reception area if I recall. But I think the Sheraton at YYZ had something similar..
