One of those is the (was the, by now) actually rather handsome Drew School. I was hoping they'd keep it, it looked like it would've made for good lofts. Le sigh.
They made it clear they were taking down everything to build a huge development that encompassed most of the 14 acre site. The crazy thing is they were proposing a school as part of the development- but they are tearing down 2 existing schools on the site. Then again, Im not clear that Drexel has firmly commited to the school- I think it was mentioned as a future phase of the project.

I wonder why they're putting this one up in that weird back-to-front way?

I've been wondering the same thing! Perhaps it has something to do with mobile crane access on a very tight, narrow site? The only way to fit the crane was to build from back to front?

Well, I'm glad they understand what a horrible piece of crap this is.

It doesn't take a lot of insight to understand that.

Honestly, if they want to do the most good for the city and the pedestrian experience they should just knock the whole thing down or, at least, the portion hovering over 8th Street. It's always going to feel like a parking garage over a road, regardless of the lighting scheme and store-window treatments.

I'm happy that they are trying to address it, and I'll be interested to see how it turns out, but I'm somewhat skeptical.

Not sure why this a press release now . . .they announced this incredibly exciting project about 5 five years ago. I think there is a crew of one Carpenter working on it, and seems usually to be on coffee break or disability leave most of the time. I mean, this project is s-l-o-w.

It's a brutal design and it's surrounded by huge surface lots to the north and the west. I agree - demo part or all of it and consolidate. They should be able to make a huge profit on a sale of that parcel.

Just spoke to my contact who is involved with this project. He says it will be accelerating rapidly soon, including all the crazy shit from the renderings like the chandeliers and stuff.

Cool. Great investigating. You do a better job than most of the professional real estate journalists out there.

Why would the Post Brothers buy a parking garage?

yup...very challenging site logistics...not feasible/cost-effective to use a tower crane...to build it at once, without a tower crane, would have necessitated a mobile crane with a huge stick to be able to pick heavy plank on the back side...not enough room on Chestnut St. to support such a large mobile crane...

Probably to support the residences planned for their Broad/Spruce project....
