NEW YORK | Happy Birthday Brooklyn Bridge!

May 23, 1883- New Yorkers came en masse to see "the wonder of the age"- A bridge unlike any yet built, a technological marvel. So new was the concept, and so unheard of was its scale that shortly after it opened, several people died in a panicked stampede caused by a false rumour that it was going to collapse!

The Brooklyn Bridge truly was a wonder, and still is. It was the first of its kind, and even today is still regarded as the genetic ancestor of every long-span suspension bridge ever built since.

Today, Brooklyn Bridge turns the big 1-2-5!!

So let's celebrate by posting lots of Brooklyn Bridge pics to show off this magnificent bridge!

Happy freaking Birthday Brooklyn Bridge, may you live at LEAST another 125!
125 years old and still kicking ass, thats the way to do it!

And to all you NY'ers, go say happy birthday in person. Just don't get any ideas about birthday spanks or cake smushing.

.....LOL!!! Sorry, Amanita. That struck me funny. I'm just picturing a bridge kicking someone's ass. I must be getting tired. Oh, well.....

Happy birthday me!

Oh well, one of the perks of living in NY area is turning the radio on my birthday and hearing "and today we wish happy birthday to Brooklyn Bridge". And we only got 105 years separating us.

specially proud to say Happy Birthday to the Brooklyn Bridge as a german as the architect Mr. Röbling was a fellow countryman! Here is a stamp the german Postal Service released in 2006 for his 200th Birthday:

Rarely do I stand back and appreciate the attractiveness of this bridge, but it really is one of the most historically significant and poetically beautiful structures ever built. Happy birthday.

Happy Birthday to my favorite bridge, and (IMO) the greatest and most iconic bridge in the world. There's a lot a history behind this bridge and a lot of history surrounding it. This bridge has virtually seen the growth of Lower Manhattan and the rest of the city. It has stood through both good times and bad, and has remained always as a symbol of iconic architecture and a poster-child for the suspension bridge.

As I'm typing this I have a copy of the original blue-prints hanging right above my computer, and another pic of the Brooklyn Bridge with the WTC and the rest of Downtown in the background taken in 1993.

I remember the first time I saw this bridge was when I was with my parents and my brother heading to Yankee Stadium on the FDR from Brookyln. On the way back we stopped and spent the rest of the day at South Street Seaport. This was when I was much younger and had not had an official liking to architecture (let alone knew what architecture was), yet I always loved the city and skyscrapers. It was a great day, and the Brooklyn Bridge was apart of it.

On my way to San Francisco, I'll be flying into JFK airport. If I'm fortunate enough to see Brooklyn Bridge out my window (or better yet out the airport windows) I'll probably give a little wave.
