It's already started. All of the steel is in place.

I think he means the above-ground part.

The "museum" itself will be underneath the memorial.

No, it's a crawler path for the Manitowoc 18000. They'll use it to construct the hub.

So, could someone please briefly explain the process from this point on? What happens to this concrete? There's twice as much now. What about pilings, etc?

Since they're aleady at bedrock there's no need for pilings. They'll start rebar for the foundations and then use the crane to lower steel into place.

They'e pouring the second portion of the crane pad now.

Has anyone noticed the steel thye've installed over the PATH station yet?

OK. Looking at sabine.g's photo that NYguy posted I see that the crane pad only extends a short distance from the area of the tracks. So the actual base of the transit station will be in the dirt area near the bathtub wall, then the crane pad will be removed. Is that right? You can only see so much from the WTC earthcam.

Not really the museum, it's more of a visitor's center. It was planned as something else, but things got political. However, like Calatrava's "bird" building that will serve as a main entrance to the PATH terminal (but isn't really the terminal itself), the pavilion will serve as a gateway into the museum.

No, the base of the transit hub is where the base of the Manitowoc 18,000 is. The entrance to the PATH hall will be under the #1 subway box, and the crane pad's size has just been doubled this past weekend.

Question What is this

Does anyone know what this is for. The steel is quite substantial and looks like it is designed to support a HEAVY load....

About the WTC Memorial -- I see that they are now adding black tiles to one of the footprints, over the blue foam. Is this the final layer? Is it going to be granite or something else?

The "black tiles" are slabs of gray granite, that is the final finish for the walls.

So will the concrete that's already there be used for the final transit hub (covered in finished flooring of course)?

No. It's just there to give the Manitowoc 18000 a level surface to crawl on.

Eventually the pad well be broken up, hauled away and recycled. Because there is no rebar in it that well be rather easy.

Just a few more weeks until the Manitowoc 18,000 gets to work. MTA's summer plan for the 1 is about to begin, so that means unrestricted box girder work all summer, minus the weather.

Those are some great pics from an angle never seen before!

The first 2 shots really show just how big the Manitowoc 18000 really is, made even more impressive now that it has it's Max-ER kit.

The lower angle also gives a great view of the work being done under the #1 subway box.
