That being said, I don't think other cities need to reinvent the egg in their own downtowns. This works as a special icon specific to Beijing.
i agree. i like the building, specially because its so big and modern for a city thats so traditional. it fits in well here because the "not so common" and traditonal buldings mix.
it must be by the Forbiden city because thats the "center" of the city and people pass through that area alot. + it would add a small amount of money being brought to the city by attracting tourist and people from the city alike

It were nice if their politics were this modern, not their buildings.

Well, the building looks out of place and it`s interesting if somebody knows the motivation for not giving it the appearance of a theater, like all great opera & ballet cities have one. (cf Moscow, London, NY, Manaus, Brussels, St Petersburg)

Beijing Olympic venues are amazing. These coming Olympics will be quite a spectacle.

No, the aqautics center is a different structure.

There is a new thread for it here - http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=136209

This is a forum about buildings, not politics - so don't even start...

Why should a theatre only have one look? Most cities built theatres that were of their time at the moment...why should China not do the same?

Thats absurd. How are those antiquated structures at all relevant to the state our technological ability, or our creative ambitions? They represent a time, and we do them an injustice every time someone lacking in an imaginative capacity decides to erect a revivalist structure.

Edit, I see corporate makes a similar point here on the second page.
