Gettysburg, PA

Gettysburg, PA is most widely known for the Battle of Gettysburg, which took place from July 1 to July 3, 1863. It is the seat of Adams County, and is located at a major crossroads of the Lincoln Highway (which is a significant reason why the battle took place where it did).

This photo thread focuses on the town of Gettysburg, with several shots of the battlefield thrown in. Photos were taken on 4 different trips (October 2010, April 2011, October 2012 and April 2013).

I am rather surprised one can see Sugarloaf Mountain in Maryland without the Catoctin Mountains obstructing the view since the Catoctins are taller.

Beautiful set of photos. I keep driving by Gettysburg on US 15. This time I need to make a stop into town. Thanks for sharing.

I figured it was Sugarloaf because it was on the southern horizon and appeared to be off to the east of the Catoctins.

You definitely need to stop in town. You can easily spend days exploring both the town and the battlefield.

I really have to kick myself now for never making it to Gettysburg while I lived in Pennsylvania. That downtown looks beautifully preserved.

Nice shots. Lovely little solid town. Looks like an Americanized (wider streets) German town.

Really? Doesn't surprise me. Gettysburg lies to to the northeast of Frederick. As we both know, the Catocin Mountians lie west of Frederick, and sugarloaf is to the southeast of Frederick. Therefore, the Cotocins wouldn't block the view directly south toward Sugarloaf at all.

Love the photos! I've been spending a lot of time in Gettysburg recently, driving up 15 because I've had a boyfriend out in Hanover for a while and we meet up there often. Great town for sure!

Thank you everyone for the nice comments. I've fallen in love w/ Gettysburg, not only for the history but for the town itself as well. My wife and I try to visit there at least 1-2x/year.

FYI, fall is a very nice time to visit Gettysburg. The fall colors are very nice, and the numerous apple orchards in the area have their harvests at that time. The National Apple Harvest Festival takes place every October in nearby Biglerville. On that same note, spring is also a nice time to take in the area because those same apple orchards are blossoming. There are several nice wineries in the area as well.

Great pics. My wife and I were chaperons for my daughters class trip there about 15 years ago when she was in elementary school. It's a beautiful town and the battlefield is a moving place (even when you're with a busfull of kids). That bridge pic is great. Thanks.

Very nice pictures, thanks…..

I visited Gettysburg back in 2012. I found the National Battlefields Park very moving (even though I'm a Canadian, I'm a sucker for civil war history - something like 40,000 Canadians actually fought in the civil war on the Union side).

I would like to go back to Gettysburg sometime in the not too distant future and pay more attention to the town itself.
