Great pictures! I didn't realize that Ottawa had so many great smaller buildings. I see some similarities to Toronto, Hamilton, and London all in Ottawa.

That chateau style for buildings is pretty cool. I'd like to see some of that style down in the U.S., although I don't think that it would work that well here.

There are lots of nice canyons in downtown Ottawa, it has a very dense CBD.

It looks like a beautiful city even in winter. I am surprised at its ranking because I would have thought Calgary was bigger. Thanks for sharing.

GREAT PHOTOS!
Downtown Ottawa was very busy last summer when I visited for a few days. At first I wasn't impressed with downtown--it was dominated by charmless 1970s and 1980s boxy offices and concrete condos, but then I saw the area around Rideau Canal, Parliament Hill and Byward Market--that area is a jewel!

I didn't cross the Rideau Canal for this tour, although a few buildings on that side show up here. There are lots of nice buildings on the other side, which I will show another time. I also did a tour of the ByWard Market a couple months ago: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=176157

I also just noticed that I accidentally left out a couple of megapanos of two of the nicest highrises in downtown Ottawa. Damn!

Since this is about Downtown, is there a plaque or monument or marker in Confederation Park for the location of the third Dey's Arena, which was torn down in 1927?

(Also, just curious, what's the name of the neighborhood surrounding McNabb Park?)

Wow, I've never heard of Dey's Arena! After a quick read through Wikipedia I realize that there definately should be some kind of plaque. I'm gonna check that out this week sometime. Thanks.

Wikipedia says that there is a monument for the second of three Dey's Arenas (near McNabb Park, hence why I asked about it, but I didn't know about the monument). I don't know if there are plaques or anything about the other arenas, though. The history is very blurry, but apparently one or more of the Dey's Arenas hold records, such as first rink specifically for hockey in Canada, and maybe some other stuff.

Hockey arenas and hockey history in Ottawa would be enough to make an entire thread (and one that I would LOVE to see). You guys have the Aberdeen Pavilion, which hosted hockey back at the turn of the century and is still around. You also have some interesting arenas that have hosted junior hockey. This is all on top of the Dey's Arenas and other demolished buildings.

Downtown Ottawa reminds a lot like Downtown DC... very dense with canyons of buildings.

xzmattzx: Interesting, I've never even heard of Dey's Arena, but reading the wikipedia pages, it seems there is a lot of hockey history here.

Thanks all!

You need to do a photothread on it.

I'd do it myself, but Ottawa is way too far away.

Quite a few nice historic buildings. And I'm shivering just thinking about the cold.

All these years I've thought Calgary was #4 and Ottawa was maybe half that size. Learned something today.
