they'll probably strike oil or unearth an ancient chia pet burial ground or the fossil of a new species of beer-swilling dinosaur to cause further delays.

or maybe i'm just naturally pessimistic.

^ well, this project was only first proposed 9 years ago, so why ever would you be suspicious of a potential delay?

observers over at SSC report that, as of last week, the excavation pit has now had gravel placed in it and a pile driver has been erected along with piles delivered to the site.

we can now move this one to officially U/C!

I have never been to Milwaukee and really want to visit in the near future. I was all set to go in spring 2020 but had to cancel due to the lockdown.

BTW I have done a search on the Diagrams page for buildings taller than 150m / 492ft (often used as a criterion for calling a building a skyscraper) in all Midwestern states except Illinois. This search includes proposed projects because some of them might already be under construction, but it excludes towers e.g. the Gateway Arch. This search yielded 49 results, take a look:

https://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?searchID=95735919

Four of the 49 skyscrapers are in Milwaukee.

^ the SSP database is a little "messy".

Here's what the CTBUH has for 150m+ skyscrapers in the Midwest:

Nearby cities just outside the Midwest for reference:

Pittsburgh: 10
Louisville: 2
Buffalo: 1

Milwaukee is fairing pretty well, especially since it only had two 150+m skyscrapers a short while ago, so it's been moving up the rankings on this metric, leap-frogging St. Louis, Cincy and Indy.

^ totally.

They've been dithering around in the dirt for so long now now, with relocating the existing sewer main and driving piles, that I was starting to get a little concerned about progress.

But the tower crane finally going up is a great sign of forward momentum!

I wonder if they're leaving room for a potential second tower, or if that was just a pie-in-the-sky rendering.

after the Couture is built, I really hope Milwaukee gets a significant new tallest. the skyline is starting to get a bit flat. an 800 footer would be both peachy and keen.

The tower crane is complete!

It looks like a proper construction site now.

The illuminated "Findorff" sign on the back boom is a nice touch (Findorff is the GC for the project).

800 feet would be sweet, but even something only 700' tall would really help "peak" the skyline.

Northwest Mutual was probably the best shot Milwaukee had to get a trophy tower of that height, but they kinda undershot, IMO, only going to 550' with their new HQ tower competed back in 2017.

I wish they would've been more ambitious and gone for a new tallest, kinda like what Mutual of Omaha might do with their new HQ tower.

Milwaukee's skyline is so sparse, I think it would benefit from a half dozen 300- to 400- footers before building anything taller than 800 feet. Not that I'd complain about an 800-footer...

It's really only "sparse" because it's spread out over such a large area. There are 20 floor highrises in Milwaukee from Marquette Campus all the way to the Lakefront which is like 2 miles. They are similarly spread out North to South along the lake. I feel most smaller cities like Milwaukee Ave much more tightly clustered.

milwaukee has actually been doing a pretty decent job building shorter fill-in buildings for its skyline as well.

here's a top 20 tallest for the city, including the proposed 333 N. Water which is scheduled to kick-off in May.

50% of the list is 21st century towers (in bold below), which is not too shabby at all for an old rust-belter.

Top 20 tallest buildings in milwaukee in the not too distant future:

1. U.S. Bank Center ----------------- 601' - 1973
2. Northwestern Mutual Tower - 554' -2017
3. Couture ------------------------- 537' - 2023 - U/C
4. 100 East Wisconsin -------------- 495' - 1989
5. University Club Tower -------- 446' -2007

6. Milwaukee Center ---------------- 426' - 1988
7. 411 East Wisconsin -------------- 408' - 1985
8. 7Seventy7 --------------------- 387' - 2018
9. Kilbourn Tower --------------- 380' - 2005
10. 333 N Water ----------------- 365' - 2024 - PROPOSED

12. Milwaukee City Hall ------------ 353' - 1895
12. Northwestern Mutual Tower --- 349' - 1990
13. The Moderne ---------------- 348' - 2013
14. BMO Harris Center ---------- 335' - 2020
15. AT&T Center -------------------- 313' - 1924

16. Chase Tower -------------------- 288' - 1961
17. Ascent ------------------------ 284' - 2022 - U/C
18. BMO Harris Bank Building ----- 277' - 1969
19. Hilton Milwaukee --------------- 274' - 1927
20. Potawatomi Casino --------- 264' - 2014

my favorite angle of Milwaukee is driving up I794 and crossing the Hoan bridge from the south. the skyline really stretches west along the interstate to the Marquette campus.

the Couture should fit snugly in the gap between the U.S. Bank and NW Mutual buildings in this image:

^ yes, the view of the skyline from the northbound Hoan Bridge is a great one:

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.0259...7i16384!8i8192

but the Couture will actually block the right (east) side of NML's HQ tower in that view from the Hoan, blocking the university club tower peeking out behind it as well.
