Finally! Holy shit. I found a picture of this building with hoarding from August 2018. This has taken so long. It can't be actually done either.

It's still unfinished on the outside (unless they're planning on keeping the broken/ugly bricks uncovered and unrepaired) and there's still a fence (it's now chain link instead of wood) but it's something at least.

The inside is also still very raw.

Theres space for a really nice, small patio on the King William side of the building with plenty of natural tree shade. I hope something goes in that makes use of that space.

Its still not done, and I haven't seen much work being done on it to be honest. But I noticed the lack of for lease sign, so maybe it's nearly ready?

The first floor may not be completed until they have a tenant.

Alright, now we've got it updated! Forgot to take a shot last week when walking by after the previous post by urban_planner.

Certainly livens up the stretch. Pretty cool to think there will likely be two full blocks of restaurant/bar options on KW once this finishes up (assuming it will be a food establishment of some sort to fit the vibe).

That John St section could really fill up someday soon too. That John St Diner really needs to go. I'm all for hole in the wall mom and pop shops, but that places food is below mediocre.

it would be nice to see the Corinthian metal pieces added back to the tops of the columns one day. It's wonderful to think that pretty much noone alive on this forum has probably ever seen the original columns on this building before the awful renovations that covered it up and frankly butchered this building.

Everything above this level is still imo butchered - esp those pediments.

wish you had taken a regular shot too - that one doesn't really show if they have fixed the brick right above the cornice or not that's crumbling away..

I really hope they focus on fixing the rest of the outside one day too.. even if its just to completely reface the bricking.

compared to the immaculate bricking of the refaced fire hall beside it it just looks a bit worn and tired, as is its right being so old..

Let us compare to the original building:

It's funny to think that even back THEN the pillars and arches were originally covered up, it must go back to almost the wood era of hamilton in like the 1830s and 40s.. also cool to see the original buildings in the surrounding area..

Note the BEAUTIFUL pediments on it though that have now been bastardized.. we need to put those back on..

I believe the architect is the same one who designed the treble hall as the architecture is almost exact (the windsor hotels pediments are actually MORE ornate than the treble halls) - from the pediments right down to the corinthian columns and cornice above the first floor - if one were to fully restore this building one should refer to that building:

Hmm so they decided to "panel" it up - not sure I like that solution but eh when it comes down to it it's something at least..

The brick exterior really needs to be removed and redone, properly. It's crumbling and fading. Being beside the immaculate brick and stone of the fire hall just makes it look that much more glaring.

Yeah that white is extremely distracting and out of place! I think they should match the other black bits.

They need to put the original pediments back on - those things are atrocities.

Also it appears they kept half of the raped pediments and replaced the other half with.. newly raped pediments lol.. the historical aspect of this building has not been respected at all over time..

I know it's hard to see but here are the original pediments:

but because its similar to the treble hall and the dundas building it would appear the originals look like them as well

I say we petition to restore the façade of his building back to what it used to look like, using those 2 buildings for reference, and have a metalworker restore the Corinthian column tops while they are at it - respect the character of these original designs!
