I'd much rather have office space so to building an office tower. If a bunch of companies could get together to build something huge like the First Canadian Place or Scotia Plaza, that'd be great, but won't happen anytime soon.

Plenty of office towers are under construction...

I agree. This would have been the ideal site and building for the VAG. Honestly, with the current proposed design it looks a lot like an art gallery/museum with mixed-use on top.

They could've at least made the addition more sympathetic to the colour scheme of the existing post office, maybe with burgundy/copper coloured mullion fins or spandrel

Or just put the casino towers on top of it

I agree the design would be better with that additional treatment. Maybe try emailing/writing the City or design team while it is still in the rezoning stage. Constructive feedback like that is always welcome, and maybe they'd be open to considering it?

That's actually not a bad idea, would help tie the two expressions in a sensitive manner and isn't overly expensive.

Honestly write it in to the city, this thing still isn't UDP approved.

While I like the proposal quite a bit, I agree that highlights consistent with the red in the original building would have made it more eye-catching, and a better blend.

At the very least let's hope for non-clear glass or dull green/grey/white spandrel.

It will be clear glass, it's harder and harder to hit LEED requirements with any sort of tinted or heavy filmed glass.

Well that certainly is a shame. Would be nice to, at the very least, get glass colored like the one on Modello in Burnaby.

LEED certification is so absolutely ridiculous and it should be scrapped as a requirement.

Without doing a complete - and maybe gimmicky - redesign of the towers, IMO a subtle reiteration of the adobe and sienna colours of the Main Post Office building might be good.
I'm not talking metal strips or spandrel, just a tinge of the sienna / adobe colours on the tower portions to give the entire project more colour colhesion and harmony, and less clash.
Maybe a pale tinge the exterior glass on the buildings themselves: but as I said, very subtle, not screaming stripes or bars or other gimmicks.

Great suggestion/example. There needs to be a more harmonious blend between the old and new with this project.

Can somebody explain this? I thought the point of tinted glass was to reduce the amount of solar heat transmitted into the building, which would save energy used on AC (which are energy hogs).

MY EYES!!!

Yeah, very likely. I also like dleung's idea and it would indeed tie in with the old part much better. The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg only works because the glass is also off beautiful shape and high quality. The current proposal looks like a poor man's copycat.

Vancouver likely has the opposite need, meaning heat gain during the 8 months per year that the average high is at or below 15 degrees.
