THE BUZZ IS BUILDING
FOR OUR NEW HIVE!
As Discovery Centre members, you know how important the Centre is not just to your family, but also to our community. As we look forward to the New Discovery Centre we’re building on the Halifax waterfront, we’re excited by the hands-on, minds-on learning opportunities this incredible new facility will offer Nova Scotians. With five marquee galleries, an Immersive Dome Theatre, Innovation Lab, Atrium and expanded Travelling Exhibits Gallery, the New Centre will be an extraordinary educational and cultural resource in the heart of Halifax. And we know it will inspire future generations of Nova Scotians.

Today we launch our public campaign – beelieve. To date we have raised over $17M from the private and public sector to help us build the New Centre. But, now we need all Nova Scotians to beelieve in our New Discovery Centre to help us get to our $20M goal. We especially need our Members to beelieve.

There’s three ways you can bee a part of the legacy:

1) Donate now. Make a one-time donation online. Donations of $25 or more will be entered into a draw to win a one-year family membership to the New Discovery Centre. Donations of $100 or more will be entered into a draw to win a lifetime membership to the New Discovery Centre.

2) Fundraise with us now. Create your own digital Hive and “sting” your friends, family, colleagues and followers by inviting them to help you fill it. Raise $1,000 or more and you’ll also get your very own LEGO bee in the Community Colony art installation up for one year in the New Centre.

3) TAKE YOUR SEAT! Put your name, or honour someone else with their name, on one of 50 seats – comfy, reclining, sit back and relax kind of seats – in the dazzling Immersive Dome Theatre. Individual seat sponsorship is only $2,500 and can be paid in one installment or monthly up to a maximum two-year period. Details on all of these legacy pieces can be found at beelieve.ca.

So Member Colony, beelieve in the New Discovery Centre. Beelieve in science to change the world; starting right here at home. Beelieve by making your contribution now. An investment in the New Discovery Centre is an investment in our children, our province and our future.

It is good to see that the new interior construction for the Discovery Centre will start in August.

There are a few new interior renderings on the Moriyama & Teshima Architects website - http://mtarch.com/4886-2/. The globe-shaped theatre looks interesting.

I like the open concept which seems to fit in with the accompanying NS Power building.

I'm assuming that's going to be a planetarium of some sort, given the shape? Maybe about 40-50 seats? Not sure if that was on the list of things to be included with the new Discovery Centre, though.

There's a small one at Dal, I think, but it's something Halifax could use in a more public venue.

In this June 15th post by beyeas it is described as "an Immersive Dome Theatre" (here is a description of such a theatre from Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulldome ). Hopefully for visitors to the new Discovery Centre it will be adequate for a planetarium-like experience.

I hope they secured rights from the Library for the use of The Killer Stairs (TM Regd.) Looking at those, the cost must have been staggering.

Whoah - these ones look like they go straight up without zigzagging all over the place. I would have thought they would have appealed more to your delicate sensibilities - less likely to cause poor little you to experience vertigo while in a place of learning. Perhaps you can hire a guideperson to take you gently by the elbow, or you could always take the elevator.

It's always nice to see the youngsters offering to help out those of us who old and frail.

Long straight runs like this are more likely to cause vertigo. And if one falls, there isn't any stopping until you reach the bottom.

Just imagine the kids sliding down the stair railings from the top to the bottom. How could anyone take that joy away from the youngsters

In all seriousness, kids will have to be well supervised (or have extra-high railings).

With respect to railings, my hope would be that, much like the library, they also have 1/2 height railings for kids to hold on to.

Construction pictures

There are several construction pictures at this link - https://www.instagram.com/beelievedc/. The steel for the immersive dome theatre is being assembled and a couple floor levels and stairs have been installed.

Well, that helps to answer my question in the Green Lantern thread. Sounds like both projects will be able to start soon.
