by Bridgette Meinhold, 03/08/12

The new Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi is slated to begin construction in 2013 and will provide advanced medical care in the heart of the city. Envisioned as a sustainable city within a city, the new hospital will feature strategies to cope with the intense desert climate to create a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere for patients and visitors. The SOM-designed hospital is aiming for a Two Pearl rating under the Estidama guidelines for sustainable design, which is equivalent to a LEED Gold certification.

the centre of Cave Paintings of the Roca dels Moros is very, very similar to HEAD SMASHED IN BUFFALO JUMP in southern Alberta, Canada, just south of Calgary. although the Alberta facility is larger and more elaborate, still, i am left wondering if this architecture was inspired by the Head smashed in buildings layout. here is a link to the famous Alberta landmark. btw, i really like buildings that are integrated with the landscape such as both of these buildings are.

here is the link and i hope some day some of you come for a visit here and southern Alberta in general. http://history.alberta.ca/headsmashedin/default.aspx

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Microscopy Building, Wollongong, Australia
Architectural innovation on Australia's East Coast

Located at the University of Wollongong Innovation Campus, the microscopy building forms the centrepiece of a collection of research buildings by SKM-S2F known as the Australian Institute of Innovative Materials, Process and Devices (AIIM P+D). Accessed over two levels via a naturally ventilated glazed ‘link’ between two large precast concrete research buildings, this delicate timber structure houses some of the country’s most powerful microscopes. With the microscopes highly sensitive to electromagnetic interference, any continuous structural elements in the vicinity must be non-ferrous; this set the stage for the method of construction and the palette of materials.

Fukoku Tower by Dominique Perrault Architecture (FR)

Inspired by ‘a gigantic tree whose roots proliferate on the surface of the ground’, this reflective glass-clad office building was completed in 2010 by a renowned Parisian architectural practice Dominique Perrault Architecture. Located in Osaka, Japan, the 28-storey tower was developed for Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance Company and apart from the office space, the high-rise also encompasses additional facilities such as university laboratory, underground car park and a 4.900-square-meters commercial area.

Kengo Kuma & Associates completes new training centre in Nagano

Kengo Kuma & Associates wanted to create a building standing solely with a roof, not a box enclosed with wall. Given that the training centre aims to learn about nature and outdoor activities in this rich natural environment, the architects thought that a typically Japanese, semi-outdoor space under a deep eave would perfectly serve the purpose. In such set-up, studying indoors and activities outdoors in the forest could be connected seamlessly.

Hearst Tower, New York, United States
A building that almost wasn't is celebrated in film

The Hearst Tower in New York City marks an important moment in architectural history. As the first skyscraper to be built in the city post 9/11, it sent a message to the world that America’s great tradition of building towers was not dead as many feared but that it was alive and well, infused with a new vitality and informed by a different set of values. Indeed Hearst Tower was the first of a new generation of skyscrapers that were more smartly built - both greener and more technologically advanced - making it a benchmark for our industry and for the city of New York.

The Sainsbury Laboratory - University of Cambridge, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Stanton Williams completes new lab for University of Cambridge

The Sainsbury Laboratory is an 11,000-sq-m major plant science research centre set within The University of Cambridge Botanic Garden. The brief set the standards for performance and quality uniquely high, defined at commencement as 'facilitating world class science' and 'achieving world class architecture'. The design, as stipulated by the brief, reconciles complex scientific requirements with the need for a piece of architecture that also responds to its landscape setting. It provides a collegial, stimulating environment for innovative research and collaboration. The building is situated
within the private, ‘working' part of the Garden, and houses research laboratories and their associated support areas. It also contains the University's Herbarium, meeting rooms, an auditorium, social spaces and upgraded ancillary areas for Botanic Garden staff, plus a new public café.

Priorities at the boarding school include creating and maintaining an inclusive and supportive environment for the students, which extends to athletic pursuits.

Abelardo Gonzalez designs new World Maritime University in Malmö

The competition addressed to the extension of the existing World Maritime University building in Malmö, Sweden. Taroudant University, Taroudant, Morocco
Taroudant University reinterprets Moroccan culture for the 21st Century

A secular town with a strong cultural identity, Taroudant's architectural style, full of history, is an expression of the deep Moroccan South. The Taroudant University is an attempt to reinterpret that heritage through a building that carries a vision for the future. To that effect, the design relies on a set of architectural and urban principles brought to life through a conception where the inward and the outward interpenetrate, the scales vary and where the user is one with architecture.

The Hub - Coventry University, Coventry, United Kingdom
Coventry University hub open 24/7 as home from home for studious undergraduates

Coventry University employed HawkinsBrown in 2008 to design and deliver a student enterprise centre that would provide an holistic approach to the learning, social and welfare needs of their students. The brief was to provide an innovative social and learning environment - a 'home from home' that up to 1000 students could access 24/7 for individual research, group learning, informal tutorials, counselling, support and social activities. A high proportion of the 12,000 Coventry undergraduates are from ethnic minorities and live at home, the interior design of the Hub plays reference to this by introducing modern over-scaled floral carpets, bespoke decorative wallpapers, sofas and bean bags.

the project presents a bold new face for the campus; a shared ‘contact-vehicle’ in which the college staff and students can come together to display and celebrate their collective outputs. the college demanded an innovative, design-led solution. they wanted an open-plan, flexible space, but encouraged the design team to explore new ways of supporting and enveloping this volume to create an inspiring building that would act as a fitting backdrop to the artistic endeavours of the college and its students.
