"1949 Press Photo Injured Motor Scooter Driver after Accident, Los Angeles"

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1949-Press...YAAOSwzaJX9z5K

Can anyone figure out where this accident happened? I've been looking at the photo for quite some time and still haven't figured it out.

here's the reverse.

This is W Temple Street looking towards the Harbor Freeway from near Figueroa. Across the freeway is the Rochester (to the right of the "IMAGES" watermark). This 1936 aerial view (from before the grade separation at Temple and Figueroa) shows the stores down the left side of e_r's picture.

I posted this reverse view last month in post #36744

USC Digital Library

This detail view shows the "LUCKY" part of the "LUCKY SPOT" sign visible in e_r's picture.

Very cool. The 'Lucky Spot' sign is what caught my attention.

Thanks Hoss!

What's the name of that cafe on the far left in your second photo? -something 'Bear'
The building it's in is a garage, but it has nice 'deco' detailing above the windows. (see below)

The name is annoyingly hidden by the light, but I was able to make out "...ACK BEAR CA..." on the window under the "NO PARKING" sign. The 1956 CD lists the Black Bear Cafe at 907 Temple. There's no sign of the Lucky Spot Cafe - maybe it became the Travelers Cafe at 808 Temple.

That's not a scooter in the picture, it's a motorcycle, unless terminology has changed since the picture was taken. Maybe it was used for low-powered street bikes and got transferred to the Vespa when it arrived in the early '50s. Anybody know?

I came across this single Julius Shulman photo earlier, and was intrigued to know where it was and what the outside of the building looked like. This is "Job 1215: Northwestern Mutual Building, 1952".

Getty Research Institute

Luckily, I found that Mr Shulman had visited the site a year earlier and taken more pictures. This set is "Job 909: Northwestern Mutual Fire Association Building (Los Angeles, Calif.) (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1951". There are 10 black & white and three color images in the set - I've just picked a few. The first shot shows the building under construction (I bet you spotted that!).

Here's the finished building.

This is, in my opinion, the most interesting of the earlier interior pictures.

I'll finish with this night shot.

All from Getty Research Institute

After a bit of digging around, I found the building at 621 S Westmoreland Avenue. It seems to have survived in good condition, which is more than can be said for its neighbors visible through the window in the first photo. They all seem to have been replaced. As an aside, that looks like a '63 Impala convertible parked outside.

GSV

Those neighboring buildings can be seen in this picture, which is one of two posted by e_r in post #7949. It also shows the closeness of Bullock's Wilshire. I think the caption should read "616 SOUTH WESTMORELAND AVE."

Here are 4 kodachrome slides taken in Hollywood after a big rain in 1962.

Two are 'mystery' locations, and two have discernible street signs.

location #1

eBay

'mystery' location #2 (the seller thought this might be somewhere along Franklin street)

ebay

The "Kodachromeforever" red rectangle was humongous on this one, so I cut off the bottom half. (it was mostly mud anyway )

Slide #3, Gower street sign is visible, but I don't know the other street.

eBay

Slide #4 Beachwood & Westshire Drives

eBay

Here's a wonderful slide from the 1950s showing the Nisei Sugar Bowl Cafe, located somewhere in the Little Tokyo section of Los Angeles.

Slides 1 and 3 both show the intersection of Gower Street with Hollywood Boulevard. The large building containing Vogue Business Gifts (6065 Hollywood Boulevard) has been replaced by the Gower Plaza. The Presbyterian Church of Hollywood is one of the only survivors.

The Nisei Sugar Bowl Coffee Shop was at 108 S San Pedro Street, with the San Sei Do Jewelry Co at 104. The building is no longer there.

The seller is correct - this is Franklin Avenue. From left to right, the visible businesses were (with the help of the 1962 CD):

5925 Hollywood Hills Cafeteria
5923 Margaret Boyden
5919 I Gellman Cleaners
5917 Clothes Pin Laundry
5915 Guy's Barber Shop
5913 Tautrim Beauty Salon
5911 Haig's Fine Foods
5905 Herb's Browse-eteria
5903 Victor's Food Market
5877 Habit Hollywood Cleaners
5875 Tropicale

The building containing the last two businesses (east of Bronson Avenue) is no longer there. Here's a current view.

It appears to be a Cushman "Barrel Spring" Eagle motor scooter, which the Cushman ID page (http://www.cushmanclubofamerica.com/...es/scooter-id/) lists from 1950 to 1954. If these were model years, then December 1949 fits for a brand new scooter.

Cheers,

Earl

Excellent. From the angle of the photo it looks ( to my inexpert eye) like a cycle meant to be ridden astride. But I looked up images of the Cushman Eagle and sure enough it has the platform for resting the feet. It's almost like a transition between a cycle and a scooter. I'm a more educated man today.

The Texaco station was replaced by Pep Boys around 1962. Pep Boys was previously on Sunset Boulevard, just east of Wilcox, on the north side. The Onion Field abduction of officers Karl Hettinger and Ian Campbell took place on Gower across from the Presbyterian Church on March 9, 1963, the year after this photo was taken.

There's a Si Darling at 231 W 118th Street in the CDs from 1956 through to 1963, although it doesn't say whether this is a home or a business address. Maybe oldstuff can dig up some census info to narrow down the date of the card.
Silas Allen Darling, the eldest son of W.M. and Marjorie Darling, was born in Missouri on April 27, 1884. He and his wife Maggie appear in Blackwater, Missouri in 1910. He was a farm laborer who "worked out" at that time.

When he filled out his draft registration card for WW I he was residing in Colusa, CA and was working for the Deputy County Line Stock Inspector as a laborer. The Draft card at that time lists that he was tall and slender with blue eyes and light hair. He and his wife then appear in the 1920 Census in Colusa, California where he was noted to be a rice farmer.

He and Maggie are in Anaheim, California in 1924 and 1925 when they appear in directories. The directories list him as a deputy sheriff.

In the 1930 Census he is found, living in Compton with his wife Maggie and daughters Nadine, Dorothy, Mary and Beverly, along with a son, Stanley. (Stanley had a twin sister who apparently died at birth) Mr. Darling is now a policeman for the City of Los Angeles. That census shows him living on West 132nd Street, but there is no house number. This may have been a house located on a larger piece of farmland.

At the time he registered for the Draft in WWII he was "self-employed in private patrol and investigation" His residence was noted at that time as 118 E. 111th place, Los Angeles.

This information would date the card to at least the 30's.

Silas died in Torrance, CA on October 3, 1963. He is buried in Roosevelt Memorial Park in Gardena. His gravestone, which has his name as "Si" Darling notes that he was a Mason

At the time he registered for the Draft in WWII

In 1941 he would have been at least 56 years old. did men that age have to register for the draft?

Excellent research on Silas "Si" Darling, oldstuff. From a simple business card, we now know most of his family's history.

I thought I should complete the "now" pictures to go with e_r's slides. Although we have an address, the houses are now fairly well hidden by trees and bushes. Here's the one on the left.

GSV

And just up the hill is the white house from the right of e_r's picture. A couple of years ago there were even more trees at the front.

GSV

They're both just up the street from the Hollywoodland Realty Co building.
