An 11,000-square-foot event center is under construction on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

The Hagadone Hospitality Company, which owns the Coeur d’Alene Resort, commissioned construction of the 11,000-square-foot facility in early February. Scheduled completion is July 2011. Total project costs aren’t being disclosed.

Hagadone Hospitality Company President and Co-owner Jerry Jaeger said the year-round facility, located on a golf course, will feature 11,000-square-feet with additional 6,000-square-feet of deck space for banquets, receptions or weddings. 200-feet of sliding glass windows also open to a lake view. The space can accommodate up to 800 people.

TW Clark Construction of Spokane is the general contractor. Longwell and Trapp of Hayden is the architect.

“Our economy is soft like anyone else,” Jaeger said. “We are starting to see some improvements and believe this event center will quicken a return to our normal economic environment.”

Jaeger also said his company was able to capitalize on construction costs of up to 25 percent less than it would have cost two years ago.

The events center is the heart of the project, with 200 feet of sliding glass walls that can be retracted at the push of a button. The walls open to views of the lake, a 25- by 70-foot swimming pool, beach and lawn areas and outdoor wedding and banquet venue. Four fireplaces will give the center a cosy feel for Christmas parties and other seasonal events, while banquets can serve 400 inside or 600 when the outside tiled decks - all 6,000 square feet of them - are used.

Inside, 57 spotlights and 73 ceiling speakers will make for exceptional sight and sound, Jaeger said.

"There will be one pocketed sound door to allow two different events to occur at the same time within the center," he added.

Outside, berms with 20,000 bright petunias and 5,000 junipers will provide privacy for banquets and weddings. Inside the petunia beds will be speakers so that people in the back row of the wedding or banquet will be able to hear just as well as those in front.

And up front is a 57-foot wedding stage and speaker's rostrum seemingly floating in the middle of a reflection pool. The backdrop, framed by deluxe cabanas, the swimming pool and beach area, is Lake Coeur d'Alene herself. The beach and pool are available to any guest of the Coeur d'Alene Resort or Best Western Coeur d'Alene Inn.

Snippets from a Spokesman-Review newspaper story on the release of Idaho's census numbers from two weeks ago:

The Gem State’s population kept booming during the past decade – jumping 21.1 percent to reach 1,587,582, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday.

It won’t be enough to earn the state another congressional seat.

While most of the growth was in the Boise area, North Idaho collected its share, helping to push the Interstate 90 corridor of Spokane and Kootenai counties to 609,715 people.

Post Falls added 10,337 residents during the past decade and broke into the ranks of the state’s top 10 cities with 27,574 people, according to data released Thursday. Coeur d’Alene has 44,137 people, and the city of Hayden shot past the 10,000 population mark to reach 13,294. Spirit Lake also grew – adding 569 new residents – to 1,945. Rathdrum added 2,010 residents and now tallies 6,826 residents. The cities helped Kootenai County retain its rank as Idaho’s third-largest county, with 138,494 residents.
Ada County, home to Boise, and neighboring Canyon County were the two largest counties.

Bonner County grew at an 11 percent clip to 40,877 people, with Sandpoint accounting for 7,365.

Cd'A Metro likely to remain separate from the Spokane Metro---

According to an article in the Kootenai Metropolitan Planning Organization's April newsletter, officials from the U.S. Census Bureau have predicted that the agency is "likely to continue looking at the region as two separate metro areas..."

If this happens, this means that Cd'A will remain Idaho's second largest metro area (regardless of what happens with the metro designation, Kootenai County is the most populous county outside of the Boise Metro area).

*Any possible changes to metro area definitions might still occur though after the Office of Management and Budget updates its standards for metro areas in 2014.

I was going through the 2010-2035 Metropolitan Transportation Plan for the Coeur d'Alene metro today. There are hundreds of short- and long-term road projects listed. Here are the largest projects in terms of expense ($20 million and up):

Short-Term Projects (to be worked on between FY2011-FY2014...must be fully funded by 2015)
1. I-90---add interchange at Beck Rd. in Post Falls (by the Washington state line and near the Cabela's and 2nd Post Falls Wal-Mart)---cost $34 million
2. I-90---add interchange at Greensferry Rd. in Post Falls (between the existing Spokane St. and Hwy. 41 interchanges)---cost $46.35 million

Long-Term Projects (must be fully funded by 2030)
1. I-90---widen to 6 lanes (three in each direction) between the WA state line and Hwy. 41 in Post Falls---cost $51.5 million
2. Hwy. 41---widen to 4 lanes (two in each direction) and construct divided roadway between Prairie Ave. and Lancaster Rd.---cost $21.85 million
3. US 95---widen to 4 lanes (two in each direction) and construct divided roadway and add frontage roads between Hwy. 53 and the Bonner County line---cost $80 million
4. Huetter Bypass---construct 6 lane freeway and frontage roads to help bypass North-South traffic on US 95 through Cd'A, construct interchanges at I-90, Poleline Rd., Prairie Rd., Hayden Ave., Wyoming Ave., Lancaster Ave., and Hwy. 53---cost $400 million

Obviously the largest project is the 6-lane bypass at $400 million. The widening of US 95 north of Hayden to the Bonner County line at $80 million and the addition of two lanes to I-90 through Post Falls at $51.5 million are also huge projects. A lot planned up here in the North!

With the Washington Transportation Department planning on widening I-90 to 6 lanes from Sullivan Rd. in Spokane Valley all the way to the Idaho state line, this will give I-90 22 miles of 6-lane roadway (from Hwy. 2 by the airport to the state line) in Washington state. Adding on the planned widening in Post Falls by 2030 (which totals 7 miles), I-90 will have 29 straight miles of at least 6 lanes. Hopefully this will spur the talks of a light rail system again...

Silverwood Theme Park north of Cd'A is Idaho's most visited attraction. It currently has 65 rides on 216 acres and wants to add another 95 acres so it can place more rides and attractions in the park. The theme park is the largest in the Pacific Northwest states of Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Montana...

Article highlights---

Silverwood Theme Park could be expanding, with the hint of new rides to come.

The Athol theme park is pursuing a zoning change on a neighboring 95-acre parcel owned by park owner Gary Norton, who hopes to one day extend attractions there.

It opened in 1988, and has grown to become the most attended attraction in the state of Idaho.

I've always wanted to check Silverwood out. It is the largest amusement park in the Northwest, and I would assume it is the 2nd largest amusement park in the Mountain West...second to the park in CO.

That will place it 87th among the nation's metro areas, just ahead of Lakeland, Fla. and just behind Boise, Idaho.
The statistical change will not occur until 2013.

I was just going to post this information Cottonwood. Starting in 2013, Spokane and Coeur d'Alene will be a CSA. There will still be two separate metros, but they will be combined for statistical purposes (much like Idaho Falls metro and Blackfoot micro are now) only.

N. Idaho company gets $750K for solar parking lot

Solar Roadways of Sagle announced July 20 it won a Small Business Innovation Research grant for the project from the Federal Highway Administration.

With the money, company founders Scott and Julie Brusaw aim to create a prototype parking lot for testing, but their real dream is for a road system built of 12-foot-by-12-foot solar panels rather than traditional asphalt.

North Idaho College enrollment continues to grow...there are now over 6,700 (full-time) students attending classes this fall (which is an increase of 6.4% over last year).

Lewis-Clark State College-Coeur d'Alene now has almost 500 students and the University of Idaho's branch campus in Cd'A has over 500 students as well.

That picture actually includes both Parkside and McEuen. I will, however, post some new pictures but I have to find some time! Also, the boat that I took that picture from is out of the water for the winter so the pics would be from a different viewpoint...

Hey CDA friends! I'm doing some traffic flow research and I'd love to find out what traffic is like in CDA. I looked over some info and it seems to me that I-90 is in terrible need of widening and improvements to its efficiency. With almost 140,000 people in the metro and being so close to the Spokane metro it looks like the current 4-lane I-90 configuration is inadequate. How is traffic in CDA? I'm very curious as to why this area seems so neglected by ITD for improvement. Thanks for your feedback!

Just a quick search for my own curiosity produced this pretty sweet traffic count map.

For comparison, I84 in Boise from Broadway to Cole was ranging from 60-80 thousand trips a day back in 2003, on what was then 4 lanes, though it did widen from about Orchard to Cole.

Here's some general transportation info. from my 4/15/11 post:

The February meeting of the Coeur d'Alene P&Z includes a zone change for property located at 802 Young, near City Hall and McEuen Field. The zone change is to Downtown Core (DC), the highest density zoning. From what I could gather (and guesstimating the lot size), it would allow for construction of a building of 30,000 sf, and up to 45,000 sf (the DC zoning has many options which allow increased square footage).

I am basing those estimates on a lot size of 7500 sf. It could be bigger. There is an abandoned home on the property which was used for apartments at one time.

Based on 4500 sf per floor (3 large condos, or 2 huge ones) this would allow for a building up to 10 floors.

At this point, I do not know any more other than the zoning change being announced. The applicant is the owner of a school resource company, so it could be an office setting as well. Downtown Core is the highest density zoning--I think it used to be R-70 (residential at 70 units per acre).
