Very interesting perspective on that shot...Makes the Atlantica on Robie/Quinpool look like they're part of the downtown area.

I just wish this project was downtown...it would REALLY improve our tabletop skyline.

I'm all for improving our tabletop skyline - for making it more like an actual table. Why should be be like all those 'other' cities with buildings sticking out here and there?

Just think of how unique our skyline would be. It could be practical too, as those cups could collect rainwater to be used by the residents rather than just letting it drain into the harbour. I think we have something here...

Based on the ramp, it looks like this will have above grade parking in addition to underground. This makes sense as the excavation wasn’t deep and this took up the last of the surface parking on the site.

I wonder if they plan to demolish the old hotel when this one is done...

Would the ramp be for the convention center? Do they normally have these?

I think the existing hotel will remain. I am guessing floors 1 & 2 are restaurant and convention, U/G, 3 & 4 parking? Above ground parking would be similar to the Roy and Cunard proposal.

I have to admit I thought this was one of those things that would never actually see action in the ground. Tallest building around? In Bayers Lake? Suuuuure.
Will probably spend money a night there just to enjoy the views.

I was skeptical too. I am still a bit skeptical of 7177 Quinpool Road but who knows.

I don't remember where that 100 m+ number came from. Do we know how tall it will be? That seems tall given that this is a hotel. The floor count is a bit lower than Fenwick and a few other proposals around the city.

One trend that is emerging is that some developers want to go above the 80 m or so height limit that is imposed downtown, so the buildings downtown are going to fall farther and farther down the height ranking.

It could be foreseeing the decline of DT Halifax as anything other than a tourist destination. Perhaps 20-30 years from now the business district will shift to places like Bayers Lake, and DT will be a place tourists take bus tours to visit before returning on them to their hotels in the suburbs, since they cannot easily bring their vehicles to DT directly and there is nothing for them to do there except buy souvenirs and eat fried food and ice cream from shacks on the theme-park waterfront.

You might be on to something there Keith.

For a certain segment of the tourism market (retail tourism from elsewhere in the province for example), having a hotel with plenty of parking and easy access from the highway is more important than anything else. Bus tours might also find a large suburban hotel such as this very attractive, especially since these tours often explore the entire province rather than just the deep south end, and a convenient base where bus parking is plentiful could be very attractive for the tour companies. For the one day the passengers are going to tour the city, the bus could shuttle them downtown to explore the Citadel and the waterfront.

Downtown parking can be a hassle...…….

Downtowns are never going to appeal to retail tourism, nor should they try to. Those people want to shop at big box stores and eat in big box chain restaurants and stay at a hotel that has a pool and other amenities for their kids. That's what Dartmouth Crossing is for.

There's nothing difficult about bringing a car into downtown Halifax either.
