It could have been a octagon to continue the design of the building. The radome was the last structure that could be remotely paired with the building.

I admire One World Trade Center for what it is, not what it's not.

"just stop construction and put a spire on top." Now that last line can be changed to "put a cheap, silly-looking spire on top." They really dropped the ball on this building. I say that because it could have made a huge statement to the rest of the World. Instead the only saving grace for this building, to me, is it's height.

I actually prefer Tower 2 much more and wish it was the center piece of the WTC complex. (although much taller than it's slated for). Also,Tower 3's design doesn't even fit in with the other 2 buildings and would have benefited if it were a stand alone building closer to Central Park. Tower 4 is.... ummmm... let's just say it looks like it was a toss in for the renderings and then they realized "Damn, they actually want a 4th building... let's just go with it."

Not trying to be a buzz kill, but I love the NY skyline and I think NYC and the WTC deserve better.

How could they do such an atrocity to America's building? They should've built the roof height to 1776 ft and ditched the stupid spires!

Oh God, that is disgusting. It looks rusty and old, like some sort of commie TV antenna tower from the 60s.

It's not f*cking rusty, okay?

The antenna will be grey and white. That render was drawn in the sunset. Also the ring was drawn without its microwave dishes that will be eventually placed there.

Hopefully there's a time interval between the moment the antenna is completed to the time they start putting telecommunications equipment around it. This means Childs has at least half a year to come up with a solution.

This is very similar to how the spire will look, but slightly less spiky/cluttered on the sides.

If it's the maintenance issue that is keeping a radome from being built how about building something like this. It still reminds me of the old spire in a way.

I haven't been following super close in the last few months but is it still true that the spire will not count as part of the official height, i.e. it really is an antenna and not a spire?

^It is undecided whether or not it will be considered an antenna or spire. It really doesn't matter what its counted as if it stays as ugly as it is right now. IMO
