Belgrade Metro

Its a very slow process to bring a real, high-capacity underground rail system to now the largest European city without one. Ironically, Belgrade was supposed to be one of the first, along with London & Budapest to have one built.

In 1995, construction was started on something that was supposed to resemble a metro system. The government of the time invested hundreds of millions into a single underground station (Vukov Spomenik). Interestingly, Polish capital of Warsaw started the construction of its first metro line in the same year and twelve years later, they have almost 17 stations totalling ~18 kilometers of track. In the meantime, Belgrade took on the combined might of NATO, UN economic/military/sports sanctions and international isolation

Today, the city is cash-strapped and cannot afford full line of heavy-rail. Instead, a light rail system made up of three lines will be built. Construction is supposed to start late this or early next year.

Here are a few sketches of some downtown stations:

"Akademija" station

"Trg Republike" station

"Vukov Spomenik" station

Eh, nothing to brag about

"Beovoz" is Belgrade's suburban railway. It has four lines, with about ~40 stations. Annually transports about 5-6 million passengers, a mere one percent of about ~500 million passengers that city's public transit transports.

For overwhelming majority of Belgraders, its pretty much useless due to the location of the stations and frequency of the trains. I myself used it only for fishing trips to the canals in outlying suburbs.
