Christmas in Chicago

I flew to Chicago and spent one day (Dec 21) plus the following morning (Dec 22) walking around the city before heading home to Ohio for Christmas. I stayed overnight in Wicker Park and did some wandering around that area, but most of my limited time was spent around downtown, which seemed reasonably busy with holiday hustle and bustle.

– Arriving at ORD.

– Blue line from ORD to Damen (Wicker Park).

– Nice view from my room at The Robey in Wicker Park (luckily, I was able to check in quite early after my red eye from San Francisco).

– Off to get coffee early Wednesday morning.

– The Wormhole coffee – always a good option while in the neighborhood.

– Blue to Grand Ave where I walked south down Halsted to the Fulton Market/Randolph Street/Near West Side area.

– Stopping by Sawada Coffee to warm up and enjoy a great coffee (quite possibly Chicago’s best coffee shop).

– A little early (approx. 11am) for The French Market to be busy, but I suspect vendors here are struggling with the decrease in the number of downtown office workers and/or those commuting to/from Ogilvie (I used to work in the tower above Ogilvie and would come here somewhat regularly for lunch).

– Walking east across the Chicago River and into The Loop.

– Arriving at Chicago’s Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza.

– Checking out the Palmer House Christmas decorations.

– Strolling along State Street.

– Marshall Field’s

– Off to Millennium Park and the city’s “official” Christmas tree.

– Northbound into the Mag Mile.

– Checking out the Drake Hotel Christmas decorations (unfortunately the main bar/restaurant area was closed off for a private event).

– Oak Street

– Exploring the Gold Coast

– Hugh Hefner’s original Playboy Mansion before relocating to SoCal.

– Time to head back to Wicker Park.

– Happy Hour at the rooftop bar at my hotel.

– Now back to downtown for dinner and a little shopping.

– Heading back to Wicker Park.

– The next morning I had a couple hours before heading home to Ohio to walk around Wicker Park, Bucktown, and the northern edge of Ukrainian Village.

– Wicker Park (the park itself).

– Grand Ave (border area of Wicker Park & Ukrainian Village).

– Had to stop by Lost Larson for a cappuccino and a tasty cinnamon roll for breakfast. Very healthy!

– Time to make my way home to Ohio for Christmas.

– And my train is arriving.

Hope you enjoyed this little glimpse of Christmas in Chicago!

Lovely photos. I've never visited, but I think Chicago is a bit Canadian, and a bit New York. When I meet people from Chicago I can't even tell they are not Canadian.

Wonderful set of pics. It is crazy how empty it looks. Part of it, for the loop, is post pandemic world, part of it is that the town gets quiet at Xmas (I love that), but I think the biggest part of it was the IMPENDING APOCALYPSE, which for Chicago fortunately didn't happen. People got their sh*t done early this year, so they wouldn't have to be out on the 22-24. They closed the two Christmas markets on Friday-Saturday this year. The one at Wrigley was also closed on Thursday.

Looking at your 22nd pictures, you must have had an early flight since the snow we had all came later on that day into the evening.

Epic. Love Chicago. Haven't been there in too long. The Robey is on my list of hotels I really want to stay in. How was it?

Very nice!

I’m glad that Fifth Ave is finally adding landscaping like Michigan Ave has.

While Christmas in Chicago looks magnificent, and seeing these photos made me miss that city, there is only one thing to be said about that cinnamon roll, which is that said cinnamon roll is...

Source.

...I disapprove of that gentle smear of cream cheese frosting.

I actually rented a car since my hometown in NW Ohio is only a 3 hour drive.
I picked it up around 11:30 am, just as the snow started to fall. But at that point the arctic air hadn't yet arrived so it was still relatively mild and the snow just melted quickly on the roads. I got out just ahead of the intense cold/flash freeze and snowy/icy roads. I'm a meteorologist so I was closely paying attention to make sure I didn't leave too late.

I liked it, though I have platinum elite status with Marriott and I believe received a free upgraded room... so I'm not sure if the view would have been quite as awesome as I had from my room (the only better rooms would presumably be right at the apex of the building looking straight down Milwaukee Ave). You can hear the blue line rumble by but it's not too bad and my room had a sound machine in it for those who are light sleepers, but it really wasn't too loud. One thing I noticed was that they didn't have blackout curtains, just shear curtains. It was fine when I stayed there on the first day of winter since the sun rises super late, but I think it could be annoying in summer when the sun rises quite early to only have shear curtains in the room. Having noted that, I really liked the hotel.
