California’s Central Coast – Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel-by-the-Sea

Two weeks ago I drove down to Monterey to see some friends and spend some time in our office in the area. I spent my first day mostly in Pacific Grove and Carmel-by-the-Sea, while I spent the rest of my time in Monterey. The weather cooperated the first day, but the rest of the time was cloudy and at times rainy. Oh well, I still enjoyed visiting the area for the first time since 2014.

Great tour! I did the reverse of your trip a few years back, starting at Monterey and ending up in Carmel-by-the Sea. I really enjoyed Carmel-by-the-Sea. Lots of very unique buildings! Although I went to downtown, Monterey, somehow I completely missed Cannery Row and Fisherman’s Wharf, which are probably the two best known places to go. Oh well, more reason to go back. Plus I want to see where the Monterey Pop Festival was held back in ‘67.

Great tour! The northern central coast (Santa Cruz to Big Sur) is very scenic and enjoyable. If you get a chance, you should also check out the southern central coast as well, starting with Paso Robles down to Cambria/Morro Bay/Pismo, and finish in Solvang/Santa Barbara. And if you enjoy hiking, at about the midway point is Cone Peak where you can get some truly epic views.

Love this area, one of my favorite spots in California. During the five years I lived in Fresno, this was my day trip often on weekends to escape the summer heat of the Central Valley. I would head out from 90 plus degrees and arrive 2 1/2 hours later to Carmel/Monterey and the temperature would be like 55 F, this would be in July and August.

Ahhh excellent tour! Thanks so much for the photos!

I was in Monterey for a family wedding in early July, went around Pacific Grove and Carmel-by-the-Sea, I loved it, although I was overwhelmed with family stuff at the time, and didn't fully appreciate all of the sites. We stayed at the Clement Monterey Intercontinental which was lovely, and I even enjoyed the tourist traps along Cannery Row...but the Highlight for me was the Monterey Bay Aquarium...er, the Cetacean Institute (). Such an amazing place and incredible asset, especially all the conservation work they do.

Great photos and tour! I really love the central coast of California.

My partner and I will be in Monterey in February; I'm really looking forward to beautiful scenery, hiking, and seafood!

I've been to several of those places, such as Morro Bay and Pismo Beach, as well as Santa Barbara, though I haven't visited since 2002. I definitely would like to visit Paso Robles (need to check out the vineyards!) and Solvang, plus Cambria looks like a cute little place to check out too.
