Some pics of the construction site...pretty sure this is all still excavation and some work for the underground parking garage, since the actual location of the new building will be where the Wood building is still standing and will be demo'd.

I drove up Gray's Ferry yesterday, I don't get over that way often and the Medical Campus looks very nice and dense from that vantage point. Reminds me a bit of the MD Anderson Texas Medical Center in Houston

The footprint will be much larger than just Wood, actually. It'll come out about as far as the buildings next door. Osler Circle is set to become a normal 2 way road basically.

This building will be massive; its length and width will be broader than its neighbors and its height will be substantial; it should be a good deal taller than the graphics suggest especially when you look at the height of the neighboring buildings.

They're digging for the building core right adjacent to Wood now. They're about 1-2 floors under the bottom of the old parking garage already. You can't see it from the photos there. I'll try and snap some from an overhead view. My office is in the building across the street.

Thanks for posting DrMellowSkiBum! Does Imgur give you an option to post a smaller sized photo?

Yes. All you have to do is manually edit the URL. Right before the .jpg add an "h" for huge and it's good for this forum (will downsize it, trust me). Can also add an "l" for large if you feel h is too big.

Example:

imgur .com/hdfjuh7y.jpg --> imgur .com/hdfjuh7yh.jpg

Civic Center Blvd

I was going to say, for those that dont get over there much you would be impressed if you did go over that way,make it a point to . It is literally a "city within a city" futuristic even. I was over there last month and didn't have time to take pictures but prior to that I was in Columbus Ohio and the I was on the Ohio State University Medical Campus and I was thinking why cant Philly have a campus like this...I forgot about UofP medical campus...!! Amazing !

Agree, coming up Grey Ferry Ave from the SW it's very impressive, reminds me of The MD Anderson Houston Medical Center.

Also on closer inspection, looks like they're finally bringing down the Wood Center building. Appear to be gutting it now.

Except that the Texas Medical Center in Houston, which I think is what you mean, is exponentially bigger than what the Penn Medicine/CHOP complex can ever be:

Quote:
The Texas Medical Center (TMC) is a 2.1-square-mile (5.4 km2)[1] medical district and neighborhood in south-central Houston, Texas, United States, immediately south of the Museum District and west of Texas State Highway 288. Over 60 medical institutions, largely concentrated in a triangular area between Brays Bayou, Rice University, and Hermann Park, are members of the Texas Medical Center Corporation—a non-profit umbrella organization—which constitutes the largest medical complex in the world.[1]

* * * *

The Texas Medical Center employs over 106,000 people, hosts 10 million patient encounters annually, and has a gross domestic product of US$25 billion.[1]

* * * *

The Texas Medical Center contains 54 medicine-related institutions, with 21 hospitals and eight specialty institutions, eight academic and research institutions, four medical schools, seven nursing schools, three public health organizations, two pharmacy schools and a dental school.

It really is a singularly amazing medical complex--the largest in the world as quoted above. But you're right that the Penn Medicine/CHOP complex is somewhat reminiscent of it--in its own small way.

Penn/CHOP looks like they have space to grow along Grays Ferry Ave?
