I wonder why the Victoria design has the cycle track on the right hand side of one way traffic while the Cannon, Bay and Hunter st cycle tracks are on the left side of one-way traffic. It seems inconsistent and I'm curious to know the reasoning. Does anyone have any insight?

Not a technical insight but a guess that in the case of Vic, a right-side cycle track would interfere less with on-street parking and ambulance entry into the hospital than left-side would.

That's the likely reason, yes. There isn't really anything that prevents which side it can be on legally so it was likely chosen as it has greater benefits than the other side design wise.

So today I walked from Birge to Hunter along the east side of Victoria. Not something I have ever done before. Damn, that is one harsh street to be a pedestrian! The lanes are very wide and the traffic is fast. I didn't feel safe. I hope the cycle track can do something to make this stretch more comfortable.

And today I walked from Birge to Hunter along the west side of Wellington. Also something I have never done. Unlike Victoria there is no HSR service to deal with. No emergency hospital entrance to deal with. There is no street parking that would be impacted. Still a fast street but that happens all over the city. The deal breaker for me is it smoothly integrates with Hunter street and the Keddy Access Trail. It just does everything Victoria does and more for less.

The Hunter Street bicycle lane extension also started today. Speaking to staff, Jackson was supposed to be the detour, but apparently they forgot it was closed for the demolition of 75 James...

Jackson has always been the detour if you are heading eastbound. They didn't forget it was closed for demo at James. They just ignored it. Not a big deal. It's easy enough to get around.

There's also a lane being built on Victoria between Cannon and Barton to connect the HGH to the Cannon Bike Lane. Extra exciting for me because I live on Victoria and it means losing a lane of traffic and adding a pedestrian buffer on one of the cities most overbuilt streets!

That's definitely a win for Victoria (which is technically a recommended route for trucks coming down the access roads to the lower city) and on top of that, lots of nice Victorian houses to ogle while riding between that stretch.
