Baghdad بغداد‎

as some of you know i went to Iraq last year. like Freki said in his Iraq thread i was hesitant to post photos due to the topic sparking political arguments. but seeing that his thread didn't devolve into that, i've decided to post my pics. also like Freki, there's a limitation on what i can say about events, personell and of course show in the pics, but feel free to ask.

and please save any political commentary for current events, PM or the bar

most of the pics are from/of the International Zone/Mansour District (aka the "Green Zone.")

The International Zone was also home to Saddam's man-eating lions, which have since been moved to the Iraqi National Zoo.
to put it simply, it's Corbusier on steroids, a district of mini-cities...and it seems like it was that way in the time of Saddam, too.

on the plus side it was diverse, friendly, and seems to be poised for a better future.

The Qasr al Faw Palace was one of Saddam's newer palaces. The Al Faw Palace is named after a southern town that was occupied by the Iranians and then won back in a bloody siege that cost thousands of lives. It is set on an artificial lake that looks like blue-green glass. All around the lake are Roman-style villas. Saddam reportedly had the palace built to commemorate his nation's "victory" over Iran. He would bring guests there to watch or hunt the wildlife and relax by the lakes.

^thanks for the reply. Baghdad does have tons of potential...it just needs more infrastructure and something to clean up the air. they're even building/expanding commuter rail i was there on military duties.

Is the Grand Mosque of Baghdad still under construction or has that halted indefinitely?

Thanks for sharing these photos with us. Is that haze in the air from blowing sand or smog? The city definately has a haunted appearance to it in the photos.

al Rahman mosque; hopefully it'll be finished one day...it's currently under caretakers and is probably 2 years to completion. given Saddam's track record for building quality though, it'll probably need more work than that...kind of like the Ryogyung hotel in North Korea.

is that what the Grand Saddam Mosque goes as now? it looks halted indefinitely...see pics 41 and 42.

both; i lucked out when taking most of these pics. 92 and 93 show the difference between when it's getting dusty and clear.

Reesonov, didn't you go to Afghanistan? Iraq would be perfect for you...the first western tour group since 2003 came through while i was there. i ran into them on a shuttle bus one night and thought they were entertainers...weeks later i saw their photo in the news.

Thanks, that was an amazing and interesting thread. We never get to see Baghdad up close and personal. The city actually looks like it has lots of potential. I cannot believe how hazy it is there though. I suppose a lot of that is dust from sand storms...

Awesome thread! It's really interesting to see the city as it is everyday and not through the skewed spectrum of a news camera. It looks like a really interesting city with a lot to offer if it could ever get itself together.
