The Hamilton Downtown Multi-Residential Property Investment Program (HDMRPIP) application for the redevelopment of 137-149 Main Street West was submitted by Jackson Hospitality Inc. (Azim Kassam), the registered owner of the property. The property is presently a vacant commercial lot. The applicant proposes to develop a 73 unit, seven (7) storey apartment building.
Awesome! Funny how we were talking about this lot the other day and now the official proposal comes out.
Sorry, but that is supremely ugly. Not all development is good. I'd rather see it be a parking lot until someone comes in and builds something aesthetically superior and with more height. Enough buildings done on IKEA's kitchen-planner already.

It's just an elevation, not the official design. I am saying that it is awesome that the owner of the site is already proposing something for the site and now it will be great to watch and see what the final design eventually becomes.
New apartment project boosts downtown rental stock

Another housing project is breaking ground in the core — but this time, the developer has his sights set on renters rather than buyers.
Azim Kassam, who transformed the car dealership on Main St. E. into a Days Inn, is building a 73-unit, seven-storey rental apartment building on the corner of Main and Caroline streets. The vacant lot, which formerly belonged to well-known Hamilton developer Darko Vranich, sits directly across from the old Federal building.
The $10-million project is scheduled to break ground in July.

Council will ratify both of these contributions at Wednesday night’s council meeting.
It looks like this project is going ahead. Paul Wilson has written a piece on RaiseTheHammer.
According to the article, construction is about to begin with a planned completion by September. That's a very aggressive (and somewhat unrealistic) schedule!
"Some on the SkyscraperPage forum have seen the drawing and been underwhelmed. "That is one boring proposal, too typical," one commenter says. "Hamilton is better than that."
Kassam says that's not fair. "I'm not using stucco here. This is brick and stone." Glass too, along the street level, which will be the apartment's lobby, party room and gym."

It looks like our opinions are seen as expert! But really that rendering is bad in every way. Hopefully, although I don't care for the surprise, he is right and it will come out tolerable. Luckily for him he has given us all low expectations.

It looks like it's going to look terrible. It should not be given the go-ahead based on the rendering we saw. We might be surprised, but that's not how it should work.
I'm assuming we'll get a better rendering at some point...if not, I'm with PBRSTREETGANG on this one when he says that we can live with the parking lot until someone comes up with a design that will add value to the area.
