I don't recall seeing that photo of the Wilshire Professional Building from S. St. Andrews Place and 7th Street.
The building is especially impressive from this viewpoint. Thanks for posting it.

I finally got a new computer!
I now have Windows 8.1 -very different than Windows Vista. It's going to take a while to get used to.

Thanks for this pic. It's a little past the corner I'm interested in, but It's cool to see the Higgins building (still there), the theater (sort-of still there as discussed in the other posts), and almost everything else has changed

I looks like I may have been presumptuous to think that the Morgan Adams Building had been demolished, but it has been altered. A page on jlouarchitect.com says it was designed by Richard D King in 1929. The picture below is dated as circa 1931. On the street corner, I think that's the Wilshire/Catalina stop sign from Hollywood Graham's post above.

California State Library

Here's a better view of how the building on the corner of Wilshire and Catalina looks in 2014.

GSV

The large tree in the image above hides the rear of the building. This view from Catalina Street shows that the zig-zag detail and most of the windows have survived.

The California State Library has many other 1931 shots of the building. Here are a few details.

I wonder if the interior has survived better than the exterior.

Good eye in catching that surviving zig-zag detail on Catalina Street HossC.

Here's a nicely scanned sepia postcard of the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax. (maybe we've seen a smaller version of it)

The Jerry Lewis Club opened in 1959 and closed in 1964. Another source says Jerry's opened in 1961 and closed in the mid-60's. (The news item below was not dated.)

Alison Martino's blogspot

Someone comparing Jerry Lewis's restaurant with Dean Martin's said, "Dino's suggested a classy evening of good food and wine, whereas Jerry's implied an evening of food thrown at you by loud waiters."

Sometime after that it became the Classic Cat Strip Club. This 1974 photo shows the place at the bottom left.

Alison Martino's blogspot

You can see a recreation of The Classic Cat in the movie AUTO FOCUS. Also noted is that the place itself can be seen in the 70's film "Zero In and Scream" and in the 1973 film "The Outside Man" mentioned previously on NLA.

In the direct center of this photo is a neon sign for "Filthy McNasty's" which is now where the Viper Room is located.

University Stereo came after the Classic Cat and then Tower Video.

Tower Video closed and has looked like this...

...until currently where that area has been demolished and looks like the area in Godzilla's post again.

I found this picture on eBay a couple of nights ago. It shows the aftermath of a $400,000 fire at J.J. Newberry in 1931.

eBay

The 1932 CD lists many J.J. Newberry stores, but this is the one that was located at 445 South Broadway.

LAPL

Here's how the building looked five years earlier when it was Bon Marché.

USC Digital Library

It's still there, but someone should be held accountable for crimes like this! The 2014 GSV images show a bulge protruding from the sidewalk into the roadway, but I went back to June 2011 for this shot as the shadows from the fire escapes are very similar to the picture above (the building hasn't changed in the last three years). For more information on this building, check out urbandiachrony.

May I add that this staircase is magnificent. There's not even a handrail....but it does have a balustrade that's two feet wide.

Simply awesome...!!!

Great find Hoss C....!!!

Here it is as a swank fur salon with a Cadillac parked by the door..

So sad what happened to the Bon Marche' building.
Do you think the windows and the miniature engaged columns are still in place if someone decides to tear off that 'cardboard' looking façade?

I had these labeled "San Pedro Rail Station 1958". I'm not sure where I originally found these two images (sorry).

Agree, CityBoyDoug, this is a great find HossC.

I was going to mention it before and quote this same photo, but I didn't.
But I have to chime in since CBD also expressed my same sentiment.

This photo is just of a staircase, floors, walls and a clock, but how beautiful it is. It makes me wonder if indeed "the interior has survived better than the exterior."

I'd love to see the interior; wondering what colors it is, too.

Every Sunday, the merchants of East Hollywood would gather at my Grandfather's store with their autos, and give visitors to the area a ride to Griffith Park for 10 cents each - see sign in windshields of autos. Good for business and commerce in the area.

Was this stretch of Sunset Blvd. ever officially marked: "Sunset Strip?" "Sunset Strip or The Sunset Strip?" Next to Book Soup was once a mortuary owned by Mickey Cohen 8814 Sunset http://www.playgroundtothestars.com/...-sunset-strip/

Impressive postcard of the YMCA in Pasadena.

Fantastic peaked gable/roof on the right. I don't think I've ever seen one so pointy. ouch!
Does anyone know where this was located in Pasadena?

Another eBay find. Following the recent discussion about house prices (especially the prices of Spiros Ponty's post-war houses), this is 2927 Washington Avenue, Santa Monica in 1980.

eBay

It seems that the picture originally accompanied a New York Times article, and was captioned "High prices for small houses". Underneath it says, "Symptomatic of the high prices that California houses command, this two-bedroom house in Los Angeles recently was listed at $269,500.

eBay

The entrance has been changed a bit, but the window on the right has stayed the same. All the property sites I've checked say that it's now a three-bedroom house, and they seem to agree on a build date of 1937. One of those websites, trulia.com, lists two previous sales. The house sold for $765,000 on 10/15/2001, and then for $1,750,000 on 11/29/2005 - nearly a million dollars profit in four years isn't bad going! What the property sites don't agree on is the current value. My quick Google gave prices between $1,828,025 and $2,106,400.
