There are still some of those around. There was one somewhere in East Hollywood I came across a few years ago. My thought was that I would not use it! Lol!

There's one at the Hollywood Bowl to cross under Highland. It's large, crammed with people when events are over, not at all pleasant, and if you're tall you have to bend your head down or to the side to walk through it. It's not much over six feet high, if that.

Nice find, E_R. I knew about this place for years because the Academy Awards were held here "one time only" in 1949. But I had never seen a photo of it at all until sopas ej did a post about it.

This is the first photo I've seen of the location in daylight. sopas's post, linked below, has many photos of the building at the time of these academy awards, both inside and out. They're all, I believe, from Life Magazine.

Also a little bit of history about that and the building, which used to be the Marquis Theatre.

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=6301

The address on Melrose is right before the triangle area where Melrose ends and runs into Doheny and Santa Monica Blvd., the boundary of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

You would be in decidedly greater danger in 1931.

It seems that 70 pedestrian subways were proposed in LA proper alone, but I wonder how many were actually built...

I thought there were more prior NLA posts on them, but I only found these on the one at Hollywood Bllvd & New Hampshire and another in Beverly Hills...

CBD: You may want to believe that life was better in the good old days, but from all the old issues of the Times and the Herald that I've read, crime was just as rampant then as now. Robbery was very common in all parts of L.A., as were murder and rape. I believe the school crossings began to be shot down by the "idyllic" '50s because of crime.

Black-face waiters...hmmm

After a noir day in LA let's all head out to the Zulu Hut.

http://www.martinturnbull.com/

1920s hotspot on Ventura Boulevard in Universal City where black-faced waiters dispensed somewhat incongruous cornpones (Cornmeal bread usually shaped into a flat cake and baked or fried on a griddle), squab and fried chicken in thatched huts.
Sometimes called Zululand, this open-air stand with an African jungle theme advertised as “half-mile beyond Universal City on Ventura Boulevard.” Proprietor Raymond McKee dubbed himself the Zulu Chief and waiters in blackface served fried chicken under rustling palms.

The whole affair sounds somewhat embarrassing by today's mores.

Here's a better picture of the Hotel Hayward before the extra story was added. The larger building behind it is the extant Walter P Story/New Story Building. On the right is the Los Angeles Trust and Savings Bank.

USC Digital Library

Until I zoomed in, I didn't realize that the entrance of The Black Cat is visible.

Detail of picture above.

Weil Block and ghost staircase

But none of this helps explain the ghost staircase!

HDL has another color shot dated 2/15/60 (nine months before the one posted by FredH. The lower two floors of the Weil Block are still standing and the Meyberg Bros ghost sign hasn't been uncovered yet.

Thanks so much to Noircitydame and HossC for your very helpful information! I knew about the Weil Block but have never placed its location. I'm guessing the rooms on the upper floors were reached by the entrance on the north end of the building. Could it have shared a common wall with the Hoegee Sporting Goods Store, thus accounting for the ghost staircase?

I just noticed the beautiful hanging globes that adorn the Hotel Hayward.

circa 1910. I'd love to see them at night.

detail http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...id/2151/rec/14

and here's one at far left above the main entrance. (also 1910)

detail http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...id/2151/rec/14

details are from this photograph

http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si...id/2151/rec/14

Ever since USC changed their website, I haven't been able to save a LARGE whole photograph.
The photograph above is as large as I get it. What am I doing wrong?
I don't have any problems with the zoomed in details)

Sometimes you can save large images (over 500x500) from the Whittington Collection. But you can forget about the CHS collection. I think USC is afraid people will download, print and sell their photos, so they don't make large images available free. I've had to piece together screenshots to get a large image.

Hotel Maryland, Pasadena 1908

ebay

I really like this photograph. There's some nice detailing happening along the roof-line.
Is that a city streetlight, or something the Hotel Maryland put up? (I see it's on city property)

I found this 1927 picture of the Hotel Hayward (complete with hanging globes and extra floor), but what's that in the background on the right?

USC Digital Library

I can't find any previous mentions of the Bedell Department Store at 6th and broadway - how could we have missed that roof sign?

USC Digital Library

A different angle, this time looking along Broadway.

USC Digital Library

Close-up of the roof sign.

Detail of picture above.

Regarding large images from USC, I'm lucky enough to have a high resolution screen, so I always screengrab my images. Most of the time I can grab them in one go, and often slightly reduce them in size before posting, but occasionally they need to be pieced together, e.g. the panorama of Vermont and 4th as seen in post #20570.
