Montreal: glass and stone and some living.

I took these pics during a two hours walk today under an unpredictable sky.

I went from Le Quartier des spectacles to Chinatown and then the western part of Old Montreal, Le Quartier international and Paper hill.

Looks good! Wish all of downtown was the same scale as old Montreal.

Yes, totally nice in this thread.

This in particular caught my attention.

the old port and the toronto financial district are canada's only two truly superlative (metropolitan) built environments.

important looking, like with a hinterland that it sent ships and rails and men to extract things from and die in. and stuff.

One of the nice features here is the variety of buildings of many different styles that were built over the course of several centuries. The street network is also irregular and the quality of the buildings is quite high.

I see people argue occasionally that the history doesn't matter much because the stock of buildings from, say, 1820, is not that large, even in Montreal. I don't agree with that at all. Had Montreal been founded in 1850 but otherwise followed approximately the same arc of development these photos would be very different, even though in some of these pictures the oldest buildings are from the 20th century. The streets would be different, the lot sizes would be different, the older landmarks would be gone, and there wouldn't have been the same long opportunity for organic growth and development in terms of local institutions, buildings, and culture. In general I don't think North Americans appreciate this much.

Gotta love those strong, solid, well-designed Montreal streetwalls! Thanks for the pics...

No doubt that's a relevant point. I have that same impression. The overall feeling of a neighborhood mostly depends on the time when its planning started. It's not so much about when buildings were built since they all had to fit the original street and lot outlines, the alignment and so on, each building bringing the specific aspects of its time though, which generates architectural diversity.

That's why the old quarter of Montreal feels "European" to you guys. The street width, the kind of density right there are clearly older than what you usually see in North America. It's like a piece of medieval planning over there so to say.

I think the great thing about it is that it feels as friendly as a urban environment can be. But when you have to really increase density, it might lead to something quite extreme, like this over here for instance:

That block is not even really old, it must have been built 100 to 150 years ago. Still it shows how very old the original city urban fabric is.

It makes me wonder what would have been if Montreal was 2-3 times bigger around 1890-1930. This city would have built stunning skyscrapers to rival what one sees in NYC. The grandeur is there; its only the height that's absent.
