Bangor is a town of 5,500 in far east-central Pennsylvania. It is in Northampton County, about 20 minutes north/northeast of Bethlehem, and 10 minutes from the Delaware River and New Jersey. Bangor is in the middle of Pennsylvania's Slate Belt. It was named after the Welsh town of the same name. (here's my tour of Bangor, PA's

Would a neat town like this even rank on a list of the 100 most interesting towns in Pennsylvania? PA has such an incredibly deep bench when it comes to urban small towns. It's a state that feels twice as big as it is on a map, due to the challenging terrain and nooks and crannies within. It's a vast maze of valleys separating East Coast New Jersey from Midwestern Ohio. If you took a giant rolling pin and flattened the state out, it would be as big as Montana. There has been some excellent and exhaustive work documenting this state by forumers such as Evergrey and xzmattzx. Here's another obscure little corner of it.

The Appalachian Trail runs along the top of a ridge north of Bangor, on the border of Northampton and Monroe Counties.
Across the Delaware River in Warren County, New Jersey. I-80 barrels through the rugged Delaware Water Gap. New Jersey this side, Pennsylvania that side.
This is my favorite weather (heavy overcast; cold, but not too cold; light snow cover) and my favorite kind of nature (semi-mountainous, semi-rocky Eastern woodlands). An excellent escape from the city.
