That's the point of a contest, and as far as timing goes this one is nothing short of brilliant.

Spring coming? Coffee demand slipping? Never fear, we'll make all these idiots believe they can win a car and they'll be buying about 15 per day! (That said, when demand for this stuff spikes, the odds of winning drop considerably)

The best part about roll up the rim this week? To attract customers a coffee/croissant place in Union station has been handing out coupons for a free coffee if you buy any pastry. Since I'm often in too much of a rush to eat breakfast before I leave the house this works for me. And the lines at the Union Tim Horton's stand are laughably long now.
It's painful at Fanshawe College, where I currently work. There's three Tim Hortons there, and the lineups are laughably long. Meanwhile the student union-run coffee kiosk has next to no lineup, has cheaper, higher-quality coffee, and if you buy 9 the 10th is free. That's where I'm getting my coffee these days.

I haven't won anything yet. I know of someone who seems to win free coffee like their nothing. If fact just last week she bought a coffee, rolled up the rim and won another one. Then she rolled up the rim on that one, she won another free coffee. She has done this a few times.

Anyone else notice that on the cups it's says no purchase necessary. I wonder if that means you could just walk up to the counter and ask for a few cups.

Not a few, just one. You can also call Tim Hortons and they'll mail you a cup, I think.

2/28.

Worse than slot machine odds. And the prize is so much crappier.

I think I'm 2/15 now. I don't even drink coffee, but I want a BBQ, so I suffer through their mochas.

In elementary school I was running the Terry Fox Run. A few of us (like, 3 or 4) ran into the local deli and asked for some water and they got upset saying "these cups aren't free, you know". They still gave us water though.

3/10!

Used my latest win to try this "Roll up the rim" doughnut. It was disgusting and I felt ripped off, even though it was free.

It wasn't free; you're ignoring the opportunity cost of rejecting the other doughnuts!

Local businesses might be different. I go into fast food places all the time and just order water (I get thirsty while I'm out and about) and I have never had a problem, other than having to really hammer into their heads what "no ice" means. (Fast food ice trays are teeming with bacteria.) They don't even get upset that I am not ordering anything that costs money. I've never asked specifically for a roll-up cup with the water but I am sure that provincial/national laws about contests and lotteries require them to give you one if you ask, that is what No Purchase Necessary means.

So I guess when pop bottles and chip bags have contests too that say No Purchase Necessary, the store is required to give me free chips and pop?

No, in those cases you call the company and they send you a coupon to get whatever that thing is for free at the store so that you can participate without spending money. Tim Hortons can give away the cup because it has no product in it, so they're not loosing more than the few cents it costs to make the cup.

There doesn't even have to be a contest to get those coupons, in many cases if you complain about a product they'll send you coupons to make you like them again. Corporations are very desperate. I know a guy who complained about his pizza pops and got a coupon for a free 28-count box of them as an apology from Pillsbury. The downside was, he just ended up with more Pillsbury pizza pops.

Canada has really weird contest law.

And the complaining about stuff works. My friends ex used to constantly call hotlines to complain about product. The result was always free coupons, samples and embarrassment for all involved.

As is my understanding, "no purchase necessary" is used to prevent a contest from being considered a lottery. Skill-testing questions are also used to avoid lottery rules.

A local radio station here started the "call at the top of the hour and win $100" contests 6 years ago had the skill testing question answer as "94.3" which is their frequency. At least five people have answered wrong in the history of the contest. In most cases I've noticed it is just ignored, or they just tell you what number to write down. In many cases on the notice that says you have to answer the question, the answer has been written down.

We have a lot of very silly laws regarding gambling and drugs.
