Airport expansion project not being put on hold: TIAC

2016/05/30 23:09:48

Taipei, May 30 (CNA) Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (TIAC) rejected speculation on Monday that the construction of a new third terminal at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport might be postponed because of decreasing numbers of Chinese visitors.

The company said construction on Terminal 3, which has yet to begin, would proceed according to plan so that the airport could handle 86 million visitors per year once the new terminal is completed in 2020.

The China Times reported Monday that there could be changes to the airport's expansion plans because of a decrease in visitors from China as well as a reduction of flights across the Taiwan Strait.

Chinese nationals accounted for 40 percent of Taiwan's 10 million foreign arrivals last year, but many believe Beijing is lowering the number of visitors to put pressure on Taiwan's new president, Tsai Ing-wen, to move closer to China's line on cross-Taiwan Strait ties.

TIAC said Monday that the airport can currently handle 32 million visitors per year at present, but it accommodated 38.47 million passengers in 2015 and could face more than 40 million this year.

Construction of Terminal 3, the company said, will be completed in 2020 as planned, which will boost the airport's overall passenger capacity to 86 million.

Another project to expand Terminal 2 is also proceeding on schedule and is scheduled to be completed in 2018. It will increase Terminal 2's passenger capacity by 5 million a year.

The company said the international gateway is an engine of the country's competitiveness and economic development and its expansion is a long-term and necessary initiative.

It also hopes to develop new air routes, especially long-distance routes, and it is prepared to offer incentives to attract more flights to the airport, the company said.

Taiwan moves up schedule for 3rd runway at Taoyuan Airport

CNA file photo

Taipei, June 11 (CNA) The Ministry of Transportation and Communications is aiming to complete the third runway at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport by 2025, five years ahead of schedule, Vice Premier Lin Hsi-yao (林鍚耀) said Saturday.

Lin said the transportation ministry has moved up the completion date from 2030 in an effort to meet growing air transportation demand.

Meanwhile, the long-delayed MRT line between the Taoyuan airport and Taipei hopefully will be opened by the end of the year, Lin said, after President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) met at her residence with some Cabinet members to discuss issues related to transportation and public construction

Passengers at Taoyuan Airport expected to hit 42 million in 2016
2016/12/20 19:08:25

Taipei, Dec. 20 (CNA) Passengers handled by the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport so far this year had reached 40 million as of Dec. 13, airport authorities said Tuesday, adding that they expect the number to hit 42 million by the end of this year.

Breaking the 40 million threshold also means that the airport now falls into the same category in terms of size along with airports including Changi Airport in Singapore, Hong Kong International Airport, and Incheon International Airport in South Korea.

This, in turn, means that the country's main gateway will now have to compete with them in evaluations conducted by organizations such as the Airports Council International, the airport authorities said.

It is the fifth consecutive year in which the airport has recorded growth in passenger numbers.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)--The construction project of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA) Terminal 3 will begin on Friday (May 26), and the construction is planned to complete by the end of 2020, the company managing the airport said on Thursday.

The T3, which is much larger than Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, will have a capacity of servicing 45 million passengers a year, whereas the T1 and T2 combined can only service 35 million passengers a year, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation said.

The company said the design of Terminal 3 has incorporated the images of Taiwanese elements, including traditional rooftop tiles, magnificent ridgelines, ocean waves and seas of clouds.

TTIA’s 2016 passenger volume reached 40 million, which exceeded the capacity of T1 and T2 combined, Taoyuan International Airport Corporation said, adding that it expects numbers of passengers to increase in the future.

With a total budget reaching NT$74.6 billion (US$2.49 billion), buildings to be constructed under the project will comprise the terminal, 21 boarding gates, concourses and a multi function building connecting the T3 and T2.
