Now seeing that it has a spiral ribboning effect, I might like it more than I previously thought.

The ADA grab bar locations is making me think there isn't transparent glass there. Would be cool if I'm wrong. I wonder how this will be lit at night.

It was said this building will have "Times Square" lighting. Just down the block could be the Caesars Times Square casino. Could be an interesting duo.

the thing from outer space . .
how to begin to visualize such an anti-Gothic
anti-Deco, anti-Modern contraption on our skyline . .
The light & realism in the 740 Eighth renderings (above)
are certainly very impressive . .
I’ve always loved Astor Plaza’s crown . .
the 1st such effort after the 30s era, I believe . .

They finally have the full construction permit, so things are moving along...

Skyscraper Ruling Opens Door To Amusement Park Rides In Midtown
The recent approval of a 260-foot-tall ride could usher a new world of architecture into midtown, a concerned zoning expert says.

By Peter Senzamici, Patch Staff
Jun 8, 2023

Quote:
"Billionaire's Row" developers want to bring Disneyland fun to Midtown by means of a massive skyscraper with a 260-foot-tall ride inside it, but challengers say they're living in a fantasy world.

Manhattan's Building department commissioner approved in March Extell's plans for a 51-story tower at 740 Eighth Ave. that includes a "drop ride," VIP observation deck, restaurant and hotel that would stand just 200 feet shorter than the Empire State Building, city records show.

But Extell — developers behind the enormous One45 and several ongoing developments — now face a formal challenge from zoning expert George Janes, who says the Buildings department's approval would turn midtown Manhattan into Las Vegas.

"That’s not a decision to be made by a Borough Commissioner at the Department of Buildings,” Janes said.

“It might be fine to turn Midtown into Disneyland, but I really, really would have liked to see City Council, City Planning, elected officials — like everyone weighed in on that."
Quote:
Thrill seekers would board the ride on the 35th floor, according to drawings.

They would then strap in to one of the four spots on the three rides — one for each facade face — and get ready an 84-second, 260-foot indoor drop.

The proposal shares that the ride engineer, Liechtenstein-based Intamin, has been in operation for over 40 years.

Not really a fan of the amusement park ride, but the design is really starting to grow on me. I wish it didn't have the widened base portion and the tower went all the way down, but it's interesting and makes my brain think about possibilities. Which is more than many buildings do.

The shape of this monument to the nadir of design reminds me of the arm and torch of the so-called Statue of Liberty. I highly suspect that this is no

coincidence because this design does express a level of libertine excess which insist that taking liberties and seeking thrills must be prioritized over the

the complicit disdain for responsible behavior (and design) in the dissolute cynicism of the late stages of the current dominant imperialist delusion.

This is a rotten building even before it exist.

I don't disagree the design is unnerving, and unless we're all misreading the schematics is going to look pretty terrible on the skyline, but...

That guy is a clown. As if what goes on in Times Square is somehow above what goes on in Vegas.

Thanks. It’s not often I genuinely LOL on this forum

Yeah, this thing is just continuing the Disneyfication of Manhattan. Not surprising especially considering the apparent reluctance of office workers to come back full time.

Also, not that I’m ever going to ride it, but won’t the impact of the drop ride be somewhat dulled by being indoors?
