Looking southeast from Grand Island NY, across the West Branch of the Niagara River, through Canada toward downtown Buffalo.

That's about where I waterski with my relatives.

When you're out on the river there, you can see Buffalo above the trees looking one way, and Niagara Falls above the trees the other way.

If you squint, you might make out Los Angeles 15 miles away.

That's much more than 15 miles. That's probably around like marker 33 in Angeles crest. That's about 35 miles from downtown. I literally just did the drive an hour ago as I was hiking up there and go up very often and live in downtown. The best is on clear days after rain, you can see downtown, the ocean and Catalina Island clearly from the front range and mount Wilson. Mount Wilson to Catalina gotta be 75 miles or so

No, that's about 15-16 miles from downtown, as the crow flies. I know exactly which turnout that is. And if you look really closely, you can see Catalina in the distance, just behind and to the right of the Palos Verdes peninsula, even though its kind of a hazy day. You're only seeing the very tops of the mountains on Catalina with the bulk of the island hidden below the horizon.

Not related to the topic, but this shot of the mountains is uncannily similar to the Adirondacks in New York.

I think I remember this view from Mythbusters. This is where they filmed some of their bigger stunts, right?

Austin is "finally" starting to form a 2nd skyline, though, a wee one just yet. The Domain area in North Austin is 8 miles north of downtown. There are around 15 midrises in that area, and the two tallest is Domain II Tower, a 24-story 306 foot office tower, and The Bowen, a 19-story 213 foot residential building. Both are the tallest office and residential buildings outside of the downtown and UT area.

I took the photo below on Tuesday from St. Edward's University in South Austin. The distance is 11 1/2 miles.

This photo shows Domain II Tower on the horizon, but it also shows Waterloo, a 320 foot tall 30-story residential tower located in West Campus, which is itself the new tallest in that neighborhood. West Campus is located immediately north of downtown and west of the UT Campus as you might have guessed from the name. This photo also shows the construction of 6 X Guadalupe (blue cranes) that will become Austin's new tallest.

The Domain is approved for heights up to 360 feet, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see some taller than that eventually, and we'll have an actual skyline there. There are at least 4 other buildings proposed that will be over 300 feet.

This view won't last though because there is a 700 footer planned for downtown that will block this view.

I imagine that the cluster of buildings to the left is Coconut Grove?

Not quite as wide as the one posted above ^ (North York to downtown?) but...

In the distance, midtown Yonge and Eglinton near the left of the photo south to the waterfront on the right. A bit more than 6 miles (9 kilometres).
