of coz, it would be nice having more creative highrises in taipei but what taipei really needs is a central park and removing songshan will give us that! let's not forget about noise reduction and the associated perk of a songshan district renewal/new land release when the airport is removed.

i reckon, if taipei just dont have the economic capacity to accommodate super skyscrapers like the ones in hong kong or shanghai then please give us short but architecturally sound buildings!

barcelona, anyone?

yup. Ma's entire goal for keeping Songsan open was the hope that it would become profitable once direct flights are oppened from that airport. Ironically, China has put so many restrictions on people flying to taiwan, and we've been instructed to not allow Chinese tourists to view any of our 'pro-democracy' monuments. So in the end, our 3-6 flights a day is not cutting the cheese, nor is it offsetting the decreased profits from the hsr. Considering the restricted flight path from developments all around the airport, I give songsan at most 5 years before it closes.

On the upside, if direct flights are established, Taoyuan Airport could potentially become a major transit hub throughout all of asia, which can only be good for our economy.

transit hub? dont want to discourage you but that aint going to happen with hong kong and macau right next to us. yeah sure we can become a major transit hub in the region if we start building a brand new airport and lower our airport taxes to nil. im not being negative here guys. it is just the truth. becoming a major asia-pacific transit hub has been a government slogan for over 20 years and where has it gotten us? - no way and a dilapidated airport.

i just dont understand why ma's still clinging on hopes that having an airport right in the heart of taiwan's biggest city's going to make us competitve? come on man!? i dont see hong kong keeping their kowloon airport just so their city can be competitive.

it just irritates me seeing some irrational decisions being supported by most taipei residents due to some political reasons. i remembered clearly that a few years back a DPP mayor candidate was going to demolish songshan airport for a central park but no we dont really care about your proposals since your political believes are different to mine. everything in taiwan's grossed political.

I just think maybe Taipei city government try to put pressure to Song San airport by introduction building policy.(maybe they never think about that) Many 30 floors building come out because that policy which taipei city government introduce. Recently, a lot of companies take this advantage and try to earn more profit by building higher building. Many of them are around 120m to 150m. Recently, from my understanding, the highest one is 42 floors which about 170m.

If Taipei want to be one of the most competitive cities in the world, then they must think about Taoyuan. I think Taipei need to support Taoyuan to pass that trillions dollars of plan, Taiwan Taoyuan International Air City and Taoyuan International Port.

we were once a major transit hub, and kaohsiung use to be the largest shipping hub in asia. The reason we aren't anymore is because other nations around us have stepped up their effort while we've remained stagnant. However, we do have a geographical advantage over any area you've mentioned, and we can capitalize on it- and the first step is to rennovate and promote Taoyuan Airport. And of course we need direct flights. This is not a political thing, but it is hard not to acknowledge what a big economy china is, and the fact that we are the only nation without direct flights to shanghai isn't helping.

well being a transit hubs has it's downside too. airplanes are one of the biggest sources of air pollution and taiwan is already polluted enough. and it also causes alot of noise pollution as well.

Taking about hubs... I support the direct flights, but I think our government is not trying hard enough to get more benefits from the direct flights.

In a TW news, a Chinese airline's spokesperson was interviewed. She said Taiwanese could take direct flights to "our Mainland cities then transfer out to other countries"...

might as well go down the list:

1. Tacky/useless Ornamentation (eg. Wings/Neon Signs)- check

2. Pointless Dome- check

3. Neoclassical/faux-roman architecture with pillars- check

4. Inconsistent with Urban context- check

5. Brown/Gray/Concrete Color- check

6. Bathroom Tiles- uncheck

7. Under 20 stories- uncheck

8. Horrible greenery/walkway to building ratio on a single plot- check

9. Building spaced too close together within single plot- uncheck

10. C.Y. Lee design- check?

yeah, it looks like this building scores an 7/10 on the failure scale...
