Jeez...I remember studying in Bryant Park when I first moved here...I'd marvel at BofA...then I got interested watching the Bank of China tower go up...now BofA is a midget compared to what is going up just a few blocks down.

Can't say I see this as a clear positive.

There's a TON of stuff I'd love to see knocked down and rebuilt in NYC.

Pre-war masonry structures with great, classical setbacks and detail are not among them.

I'd love to see every single housing project leveled to the ground and rebuilt with dense, modern construction.

I'd also like us to preserve the dwindling pieces of the city - like the block slated for demo here - that bring elegance, timeless design and a sense of history to the city.

When did you move to NY? The area around Bryant Park was a dump not too long ago. The collection of garbage where Bofa now stands was hideous, as was the northeast corner of 42nd and 5th, where a crappy outdoor flea market stood for many years.

P.S.: KPF does very nice work, so I think something great will rise here.

^^

I hardly think the bryant park hotel is a dump.

Aside from looking like it's straight out of Ghostbusters, it's arguably the most beautiful building in the entire city IMO.

I didn’t say that the Bryant Park Hotel is a dump.

OK people, you're going way off. 343 Madison is up for discussion.

Looking at that picture, I'd rather this block be saved and the Biltmore replacement next door gets replaced instead.

I suspect that this is going to be an amazing tower. I can’t wait to see the design. KPF rarely disappoints.

About half that, only the Madison Avenue frontage.

Since the floor plates will be small, I hope that this will be a spec tower catering to hedge funds, etc like 425 Park.

The more I look at it, the more I appreciate it as a hodgepodge that somehow also seems to all go together. But I certainly understand that its commercial potential as-is is dismal.

They're getting ready to. Permits were filed a couple of months ago.

That's exciting, hopefully the design gets a bit more interesting.

We haven’t seen the design yet. The schematics were clearly labeled “Not actual design.”

Shown here with a version of 270 and 175 Park, the tower isn't quite to scale. It would be taller than Chrysler. But it does give an idea of how new construction is booming again in midtown east.

Whenever that design was shown in presentations, it was always marked “Not Actual Design.”
