Worst Skyscraper Proposals

Yeah..they exist. Ugly skyscrapers that were proposed but thankfully, never happened.

I think nothing can beat the Gothic madness of Angel City in Los Angeles. Good mercy. It's almost sinister. Happiness does not dwell in Angel City. Not only would it have been ugly, but it would've been about the size of ALL of DTLA.

Fear:

Quote:
The Angel City Development Project was designed as an entertainment complex and landmark attraction for the public and visiting tourists of the downtown Los Angeles area. As Brett's vision the project would incorporate shopping centers, cinemas, museums, hotels, lush gardens, and various showcases. The tower and its surrounding buildings were designed to stand on a 122 acre site which Brett and his City of Angel's corporation collected and acquired over the course of 2 years. The unique architecture of Angel City incorporates monumental concrete, granite, and stainless steel flying buttresses inspired by great historic European gothic cathedrals. These elements are merged with an original modern structure making it the first of its kind in the world and a uniquely original creation. Due to an eminent domain lawsuit filed by the Los Angeles School Board, the project's land is no longer available to construct the grand Angel City development.

One or two of the buildings had potential. But the whole lot of them all together like that looks like an amusement park. Plus had a kind of sinister depressing feel. Did they think there was a big tourist market for sinister and depressing? lol

I agree that some of these individually might be ok, but in total, no way!

WOW! My first reaction was shock, then laughter. My next thought was how there's so much of it and how it doesn't fit with the rest of L.A... as was mentioned above, it looks like an amusement park.

In response to the question of tourist demand for such a depressing location... Haha, you should see my high school students. Goths, Emo kids, with 70% of the student body wearing black every day... I can imagine this location being popular with them.

But seriously, I was reminded of the Rockefeller Center in N.Y., which I recently learned incorporated a huge amount of buildings with the same style throughout. And then the World Trade Center Complex of 7 buildings...

It's not unheard of to have enormous projects like this.

Those future-gothic buildings are actually pretty elaborate. A remedy for complaints of "big boxes"? They actually could bring international fame. I mean, those Gaudi buildings in Spain are something that I personally find well, pretty gaudi if you ask me! But they made history.

I think the best thing would be an entire city built like this... an entire new city built in a rural area which does not have any previously existing structures. Can you imagine a "pure" city just built like this? That would be interesting.

And this:

But I think you're right. In every Sci-Fi movie shot in LA, this complex is where the bad guys would live.

I didn't know they still used flying buttresses?

That one in Portland looks like a gold plated Capital Records building.

We've had some real eyesores proposed in Vegas (yeah, I know, and some built eyesores too).

Harley Davidson hotel shaped like exhaust pipes.

The Titanic resort would have a ship-shaped casino out front with a commie-looking hotel tower enclosed in an ice burg.

And then there was this gigantic 10,000 room hotel with a space/moon theme

Proposed just last week in Edmonton. That's right, circa 1980s design today.

Proposed observation tower for Milwaukee dated to 1964. Would've featured all sorts of fun stuff like aquariums for 'dolphins, whales, a jungle safari, a Civil War theater, a German beer garden and a "commando firing range."' from www.jsonline.com]

That LA thing would be cool by itself somewhere, like in the desert or something.

Geez, why didn't halfway through the planning for that LA project someone didn't raise their hand and say wtf are we doing here? It looks like where that demonic square in Hellrazor would suck you into...

i could imagine the pay per view list has 1000 different versions of Titanic...

I like how that Titanic hotel has no windows. Gives you kind of a "oh no, I'm trapped in a tiny, windowless room of a ship that's about to sink" feel. Perfect.
