As someone who works for SDA, we are all kinda dumbfounded on this one by the admin. Although, we don’t have the greatest admins... But even if wrestling & gymnastics use it.... I don’t get it. Could’ve pumped $100m more into The Bank & gotten a really nice arena out of it. Hockey does not need their own arena. Really no college sport needs a singular arena for themselves unless it’s men’s basketball. Which I guess if they build a multi-purpose arena they kinda will. But the cost of $100m seems quite steep. Logic hardly ever prevails.

I had hoped they could work with the Coyotes. It was talked about briefly, but then dropped.

Could be worse, U of North Dakota got a single use hockey arena built for $153,000,000 in today's dollars and it is owned by a private entity, RE Inc, which takes 52% of ticket revenue because it was full funded by an alumni who was in the Casino business in Vegas because it's technically not on campus. Oh, and the alumni was a pretty big fan of Hitler, literally got fined by the Nevada Gaming commission for hosting Hitler birthday parties at his casino.

Hiked A-Mountain for the first time in a while and snagged this beautiful shot of the skyline rising on the North side of town.

Awesome pic.

The Brickyard is what got me into urban stuff when it was new--it was definitely the biggest thing downtown. I would have never thought it would be so dwarfed.

Wow funny to think that wasn't very long ago really, I remember that too. Thanks, I'd like to find a location where you can grab the entire Tempe skyline but nothing is coming to mind.

I agree with the butte it's hard to get a good picture. The best I think is eastbound on the 202 before Mill Ave.

Yeah the best place is probably the Offramp/Over Pass for Center Pkwy and the 202,

If anyone could get on the roof of the Parking Garage or building of Papago Grand that would probably be a good angle too.

Big office sale for Tempe at Grand 2. Good news for the office market which hopefully leads to more office development!

With a good telephoto lens, you can see it all from the Buttes Resort.

I feel like you have to get it west of A mountain as that hides a lot of northern development.

About 20 years ago I was doing some work for SRP and got to get up on the roof of their 8 story HQ (the one with the pyramid). You could see all of Tempe and the western portion of ASU from there. It's the best vantage point I've ever seen of Tempe, but is sadly inaccessible.

There are a few spots on the Tempe side of Papago Park just south of the water treatment facility on the eastern side of the bike path. There's some small buttes where you can get somewhat elevated and see most of the Tempe skyline. They are very easy hike/scrambles and worth the time to get some good views of the skyline (and watch planes fly over). Recommend for anyone that hasn't done it.

Anyone know if they are going to be adding solar to the roof of that Novus garage? I know ASU does to all their parking garages so I'd assume so.

Looks like the Vib Tempe is starting construction. Glad to see another empty lot near the city core getting filled!

https://www.bizjournals.com/phoenix/...d3PT0ifQ%3D%3D

Phoenix-based Best Western Hotels and Resorts has started construction on a new $20 million upscale hotel in Tempe.

The 102-room property will be part of Best Western’s new Vib brand of hotels. Vib is Best Western’s take on a boutique hotel, focused on a higher-end and more niche customer. The branding was designed to be stylish but accessible for both business and leisure travelers, according to the hotel company. Each hotel also can be customized to represent the community where it is built.

There are only three Vib hotels open right now – in Springfield, Missouri; Bangkok, Thailand and Antalya, Turkey – but there are 16 more in development around the world. The Vib Tempe will serve as Best Western’s corporate hotel.

The Vib Tempe hotel is being built on a formerly vacant lot at 511 S. Farmer Ave., just outside of downtown Tempe. Best Western purchased the 1.26-acre property in December 2019 for $3.7 million, according to Maricopa County records.

The five-story hotel will have a lobby with multiple seating areas and workspaces, a lobby bar with craft cocktails, a rooftop lounge, state-of-the-art fitness center, outdoor pool and a multifunctional meeting space.

Phoenix-based GCON Inc. has been brought on as general contractor for the project. Construction has already started and the hotel is expected to open in September 2021.

“The modern, urban feel of the Vīb hotel suits Tempe’s style,” Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said in a statement. “The fall 2021 opening date positions Best Western Hotels & Resorts well for next year’s peak tourism season. We look forward to the grand opening.”

Launching an expensive construction project at this time shows that Best Western, a company that usually doesn’t build hotels but rather licenses its branding to developers, has confidence that the hospitality and tourism industry will be bouncing back sooner rather than later.

The hotel industry has been one of the hardest hit economically by the Covid-19 pandemic, with thousands of hospitality employees laid off and furloughed across the Valley this year. Other hotel construction projects in the Valley have been put on hold because of the slowdown of the tourism industry. Best Western’s confidence could push others to start investing again.

“The hospitality industry has been stifled as hotels across the nation struggle to survive through the Covid-19 pandemic and development comes to a halt for many hoteliers,” said David Kong, Best Western’s president and CEO, in statement. “The groundbreaking of Vib Tempe provides a beacon of hope for the hospitality industry both in the state and across the country.”

Here's a (poor) photo of where they're at, definitely in full swing:

Also, across 5th St., there's a zoning sign up for a revised proposal on the parking lot adjacent to the Yard. Looks like they've shifted from office to apartments: 2 buildings, 367 units, 4000 sf of retail, 96 ft. tall, 320 parking spaces (so less than a 1:1 ratio of parking spaces to units), 110 du/ac density.

All sounds good to me. Not too surprising that they are shifting away from office with the pandemic, and several more prominent office products (Grand, 100 Mill, Watermark) either built and leasing or further along in the process. I'm guessing something similar in form to the other Farmer Arts apartments going up at Farmer/University. But these sound like they would be 1 story taller (so 7 stories) and about twice as dense. Will be interested to see whether or not they are wood construction.

This is surprising to me that the Beam project isn't happening anymore only because wasn't Mortenson or some other construction company leasing out the entire building as their HQ and building it? Would seem like a good deal unless they shifted toward solely working from home and job sites then I could see why. But I hope this new project is high quality.
