That's where the cantilever and load transfer from the tower is located.

Yeah, the basic structure of the building wouldn't change much in my suggestion. You can see from the size of the building's waist and super-columns at the mid-level amenity deck where they need support below, and I wouldn't mess with that.

It's just that the facade of the sloped section below would be pushed back from the front (where there isn't tower above anyway) and finished to look like a continuation of the curved section above rather than the straight section to the north.

That could effect the number of units that they need or want.

Site for planned 73-story tower sells for $17 million

By Alby Gallun

Quote:
Two New York developers that plan a 73-story residential tower on a vacant property across from Grant Park paid $17.2 million for the site, the latest in a series of deals that illustrate the real estate market's recent roller-coaster ride.

A joint venture between JK Equities and Time Equities bought the parcel at 1000 S. Michigan Ave. last month from First American Bank, Cook County property records show. The site has been on a wild trip over the past decade or so, with its value soaring during the condominium boom, crashing after the bust and heading back up as the residential market bounced back.

The sale also serves as a sobering reminder of the punishment the condo bust inflicted on banks. Even though the property has jumped in value, the $17.2 million price is well short of the $25.3 million First American said it was owed on the site back in 2010, after winning a foreclosure judgment against Chicago developer Warren Barr, who had planned a 40-story condo tower there.

^^ Another noteworthy bit from that article:

Quote:
They plan to open a sales center for the condos in first-quarter 2017, most likely in the Lightner Building, a property they own next door.
So we are pretty far off from this one potentially breaking ground. Lot's of time to fix that design...

Some sort of soil boring machine (on tracks instead of wheels) was being delivered to the site this morning, but someone apparently forgot to tell the parking lot operator and they were having a bear of a time finding a place for the trailer to fit.

1000 South Michigan would be more than a year off.

I kind of hope not, this building is just a bigger, but still recycled design of his building in Streeterville. Such lazy designing on his part

Now just imagine it aged 20 years. All cloudy and faded and streaky.

It bears a stronger resemblance to 50 West Street in NY, which, if they use similar materials, would be a fantastic addition to the Chicago skyline. Not quite the original, but if it ends up anything like the NY version, it's still world class.

^ agreed, this one is far more similar to 50 west street in NYC than jahn's streerterville tower.

i only hope that jahn continues to refine the base on this project in a fashion similar to the way 50 west meets the streets.

Landmarks committee shot themselves in the foot, first design was way better.
