Backyard Harvest

Backyard Harvest is an idea born of the desire to increase the
fertility and beauty of our urban landscape here in Hamilton--to grow
more healthy delicious food and to help others to do so; and among
other reasons, to bring our food source "ultra-local" and reduce the
fossil fuels consumed in transporting this food.

With the assistance of some great volunteers, Backyard Harvest is
currently developing urban farmland on two sites with approximately
3000 sq ft. I am seeking a market for this food and am open to
suggestions and/or interested eaters.

In addition, Backyard Harvest has a number of clients who are looking
for assistance in developing their own urban edible gardens. Backyard
Harvest is able to help with all aspects of this endeavour, from
design plans to help getting started with veggie gardens, soil tests,
pathways, raised beds, rain barrels, composters or consultation to
give you some ideas of what abundance your land may hold.

Though things are busy right now, I welcome your calls and emails.
Remember, garden development can start at anytime: Planning in
winter, site development from March to November and planting from
April to October.

I am growing this business slowly and depend on the eyes, ears,
hearts, muscles and creativity of others in my community for its
success. Any feedback on the following items would be appreciated:

I seek
-A piece of land in downtown Hamilton for the purpose of storing at
least 10 yards of compost, pile of mulch, straw, etc. Would ideally
be accessible to large vehicles for delivery.

-Any unwanted garden tools, hoses, stakes, building supplies (lumber,
nails, screws)

-Volunteers who would like to do some edible gardening in the city.

-A Truck and trailer for hire that can carry 5-10 yards of material
(ideally a dump trailer)

If possible, please pass on to your local networks--many thanks!

It's a work in progress and has a long way to go--but it's a
worthwhile road.

My sincere thanks for your consideration and support,

Russ Ohrt

I've heard good things about this guy.

A friend of mine had Russ look at her north-end property to see if it was suitable for this project. Hers ended up being a little too small for what he was looking at. She and her husband really enjoyed meeting him and said if their property had been suitable, they would have loved to work with him - he seemed knowledgeable and trustworthy.

And I'm definitely interested in seeing if I can purchase some of the harvest.
