Chicago seems to always take the cake for distant skyline shots. One day Toronto may get closer, but it needs more and taller iconic buildings (to compliment the CN tower, which is very iconic).

Greenwich Point provides a great underwater skyline shot as well from 30 miles away.

chicago's position on lake michigan affords some pretty awesome "over the water" skyline views that you don't need a boat to capture.

hell, you don't even need a car because you can take the south shore commuter rail line straight to indiana dunes state park and walk up to the top of one of the lakeshore dunes and take some dramatic skyline shots over the lake with a decent telephoto lens.

Chicago's skyline always reminds me of the Grand Tetons mountain range. Flat terrain for miles and then BOOM skyline. There just isn't anything else to distract from the city, which is impressive anyway, of course. That first one up there that Mark posted is stunning. The lighting.

I recently found another Winston-Salem skyline photograph from Ashe County, near the Tennessee / North Carolina State Line. It's taken from a popular mountain overlook.

I measured from where the photographer said this was taken and it's 64.45 miles / 103.7 kilometres from the overlook to the middle of the skyline.

Or to Michigan City to take the famous Lighthouse shot. Which I still haven't gotten around to...

The flat plains and flat lake just lend the super skyline of Chicago the best advantages in the 'skylines from far away' contest.

There should be a distinction between pictures taken from solid ground and pictures taken from the air.

I have a picture of Chicago from 120 miles away, because I was on a flight from Baltimore to Las Vegas or something. I was 6 miles up in the air. I also may have a picture of the Iowa/Minnesota border from Des Moines for the same reason. These are different dynamics from being on a mountain or across a lake.
